The Shakedown: Best Hair & Mustache Combo - Oscar Gamble

Welcome back to the Shakedown!

Last week we introduced our latest “Monthly Mustache Shakedown” with a look at the “Best Hair & Mustache Combo.”

For week one we chose “The Big Mullet” Randy Johnson, just five wins away from 300, and a man who has consistently sported a fine Mississippi Waterfall-style mullet to compliment his fine looking labia sebucula (Latin for “lip sweater”).

This week, we look at yet another former major leaguer—Oscar Gamble.

The former outfielder and designated hitter spent 17 years in the majors, playing for seven teams.

In 1976, not only did he allow Gary Coleman to live in his afro, but Gamble helped the Yankees return to prominence as the Bombers won their first American League pennant in 12 seasons, hitting 17 HRs and driving in 57 RBI.

His best season—at least as far as baseball stats go—came in 1977 with the Chicago White Sox when he hit .297 with 31 HRs and 83 RBI.

The reality is, however, that it wasn’t his hitting or fielding that elevated Gamble to greatness.

No, it was the voluminous afro and thick mouth curtain he wore—especially as a member of the Cleveland Indians from 1973-1975—that elevated Gamble to a “greatness” stature.

And keep in mind that Gamble’s fro-stache was so immense, he is the model for the JoeSportsFan.com logo.

Keep the suggestions coming strong for the final two entrants into the “Best Hair & Mustache Combo” as part of the latest “Monthly Mustache Shakedown.”

Bring it!
