Just when you think they're done, they pop back into the race. Well, sort of.
Sitting 7.5 games back in the NL wild card race, the New York Mets still have an outside chance of making the playoffs.
I know. It seems crazy to consider this. The Mets have been horrible this summer. They were just 1.5 games back exactly two months ago, but went on a downward spiral that left many of us assuming they were done.
They've collapsed in years past, so why not again?
I always knew that all it took was a winning streak to propel them back into the race. Winning two straight games is nothing to get too excited about, it's a start.
Seven and a half games back is a reasonable distance. There is time to make a comeback. Time for the Mets to play like they should be playing; the play we saw earlier this season.
Winning is the key though (obviously). They must keep winning. Fans must stay realistic. We gave up hope and that's when they started this streak (not that it is much of a streak and they'll probably lose their next game now).
The Mets need to move past their problems. Forget about K-Rod for the moment. We'll have to make do without Jason Bay.
But much of the team that played so well in late May and June is still here. It is time for them to wake up and get back to playing great baseball.
It is time for the Mets to be the ones to make a shocking run. Dethrone the Phillies for once. Shock those guys. They deserve it.
Now, the Mets could lose today and keep losing. They could win today and lose tomorrow. They are playing the Pirates, after all.
However, they could also win today and tomorrow and the day after. All it takes is one streak to get back in the game.
If the Orioles can suddenly become good, the Mets can get back on track.
As I wrote earlier this season, this Mets team has a special feel similar to the great year of 2006. They've lost some of that with all of this losing lately.
I think it's time to bring back the fun. With that, the wins will come. Let's hope.
