Stephen Piscotty Injury: Updates on Cardinals LF's Head Contusion and Return

The St. Louis Cardinals have managed to remain in first place in the National League Central despite suffering a number of injuries to key players. Now, they'll have to figure out how to replace Stephen Piscotty's spark in the lineup.

Continue for updates.

Piscotty Carted Off Field After Collision

Monday, Sept. 28

Piscotty exited in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday after colliding with teammate Peter Bourjos as the two attempted to field a fly ball off the bat of Josh Harrison. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the rookie outfielder took a knee to the head, which caused the injury.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said initial scans on Piscotty were negative and that he's "looking good" and should be OK, according to Alyson Footer of MLB.com.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan relayed this message from the Cardinals announcers on Fox Sports Midwest regarding how difficult the play was to watch:

Fox Sports Midwest posted a photo of the 24-year-old being carted back to the locker room:

According to Fox Sports: MLB, the official diagnosis for Piscotty is a head contusion, and he's heading to a local hospital for additional evaluations.

Entering Monday, Piscotty was hitting .313 with seven home runs and 39 RBI in 249 plate appearances. He has provided some great pop since the team called him up from the minors.

Jon Jay replaced him in the lineup, and that could be the tentative plan for St. Louis going forward.

The larger concern regards Piscotty's overall health. Hopefully, he can make a full recovery in the near future.
