After putting the finishing touches on a sweep of the Dodgers in a twi-night double-header on Tuesday night, the Mets (12-9) see themselves tied with the Phillies for first place in the NL East.
The Mets have taken eight of nine games on this current home stand, thanks to solid pitching, timely hitting, and even better pitching.
There are a lot of reasons to like this team.
They have speed, they have defense, and surprisingly, they have pitching! The starting rotation and bullpen have both pitched well beyond anyone's wildest expectations thus far.
Santana has been Santana, enough said. Pelfrey has pitched as if he's ready for stardom. Neice is proving he belongs and Jenrry Mejia has showed us a glimpse of what could be a very bright future as either an elite starting pitcher or future successor to Fransisco Rodriguez.
The lineup is strong. It combines a mix of youth and experience.
With Pagan, Castillo, and Reyes, one-two-three, David Wright and Jason Bay are more than capable of producing the runs this team needs to win games. Ike Davis also adds some support. Davis provides the power lefty bat the Mets have been missing for quite some time.
In the second game of the double-header, Wright smacked a triple to the right-center field wall which cleared the bases of all three table setters. It was a thing of beauty, and for Manuel, this maneuver may have just saved his job.
Most importantly, I think the Mets are beginning to remember what winning feels like.
After losing so many games last year, the Mets needed the first couple of weeks to find their identity. Once the pieces started falling in place, the team clicked, and now is in the middle of the best home stand in Citi Field history.
I know they only won 70 games last year, but that was last year.
There are new faces in 2010 and a new attitude to go along with it. The momentum is building and the team is coming together. The new youth has injected this team with energy and there is no reason to be counting them out just yet.
This is the Mets we're talking about.
This is New York City for cryin' out loud.
This is where the magic happens.
