The Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 8-4 at Citifield today, and they completed their three game obliteration of the Pirates, outscoring the feeble opponents by a 25-8 margin.
The win was the Mets’ seventh straight, and they are just red hot right now.
Eight men in the starting lineup had at least one hit, and leading the way with two hits a piece was Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, and Omir Santos. Castillo, Beltran, and Santos also led the way with two RBIs each.
The Pirates actually started the scoring today with a Nate McClouth sacrifice fly and a Robinson Diaz RBI single, but Livan Hernandez hung in there and got the Mets through the sixth inning with no further damage.
David Wright cut the lead in half when he singled past Brian Bixler in the bottom of the fourth to drive in Delgado, and then Omir Santos had a big two-run single to cap off the three-run fourth.
The scoring would calm down until the bottom of the seventh, when Luis Castillo drove in Gary Sheffield with an RBI single. The Mets then added four in the eighth for some insurance. Reyes walked to force in a run, Castillo hit a sacrifice fly, and Beltran doubled in a pair. At the time, these seemed to be meaningless insurance runs, but that certainly was not the case.
Sean Green continued to do his best Aaron Heilman impression in the ninth inning, allowing a two-run bomb to Nate McClouth, but he settled down to retire the next three to seal the deal.
My game ball would go to Luis Castillo, who continues to impress me. He now has a .333 average, and he continues to put the ball into play and use his speed. He is playing a stellar second base, and he has certainly shut this critic up.
The Mets will host the Braves, who beat the Phillies today, in a three-game series starting tomorrow at 7:10 p.m. It should be a heck of a battle as Johan Santana will take the hill against Derek Lowe. Way to go boys. Let the good times roll.
