Thoughts on the Giants: Can Buster Posey Backup at Catcher and First Base?

With the news of Travis Ishikawa going down with a freak foot accident, I had to ask myself a question that came out of left field.

What if the Giants No. 1 prospect Buster Posey became the backup catcher as well as the backup first basemen for the Giants?

Although Travis Ishikawa isn't on the DL, there is a possibility of having to do surgery on the torn ligaments, which would mean that he would be out for a significant amount of time.

Bruce Bochy has said that he wants Buster as a full-fledged catcher and nothing more. With the possibility of Ishikawa out with injury in the next couple of weeks, doesn't it make a little sense for Buster to take some ground balls at first base this season if he does in fact make the team out of Spring Training?

Think about it: Buster would get a sufficient amount of games batting for the Giants if he were to play both positions, and he would be able to keep Aubrey Huff and Bengie Molina fresh for the season.

This is all hypothetical, of course, but we all know the Giants are still starving for a little more offense and Buster may be able to help the team with his highly-coveted bat.

As any Giants fan who has been following Buster Posey since he was selected by the Giants in 2008 knows, Posey is an extremely talented athlete who is able to play anywhere on the baseball field.

Is he talented enough for fielding first base in the majors? I certainly think so.

I mean, he did in fact play all nine positions in a Florida State game against Savannah State.

Learning both catcher and first base might be a little much for the rookie, but he has too many intangibles that bringing this suggestion into light isn't so far fetched at all.

The thing is, if Buster Posey tears it up in Spring Training, the Giants brass should consider platooning him in two different positions to get maximum value.

It's crazy to think that Posey can just all of a sudden just play both first and catcher, but hey, it's an entertaining idea, isn't it?
