When you think of someone with bad vision you tend not to think of baseball players who hit .330 with 25 home runs.
Pablo Sandoval may have not had terrible vision, the Panda is getting some brand new Oakleys to help him "see" the ball better.
I know what you're thinking.
A guy who hit .330 is getting glasses so he can see the ball better? Cue the Tim The Toolman Taylor soundbite please.
Apparently Sandoval has been wearing his new specs when he was playing in the Venezuelan league this past off season and the numbers speak for themselves.
If hitting .395 and five home runs is any indication well then ask yourselves this.
Is a 2010 batting title in line for our favorite Giants position player?
While it's not realistic to think that number 48 can hit .395 in a full season, I am highly optimistic that he can hit .335 or .340. I also believe that Sandoval will also take more walks, which will further improve his average.
For a man child like Sandoval who's philosophy is, "See ball. Hit ball." Giving him the ability to, "See ball better. Hit ball better," is a very scary thought.
The Panda's Confidence is Growing
On a side note I've also noticed while watching and listening to several interviews with Sandoval, that his confidence in his abilities is even higher this season than the last season. Just the way he talks and how relax he looks in front of the camera is telling me that he knows he is good.
Compared to the 2009 season where I could tell he was a little nervous and wasn't sure what was going on in interviews.
And confidence is a good thing.
I remember Barry Bonds talking about confidence in the batter's box with Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow. Bonds said that he believed that this is what separates great hitters from good hitters.
Bonds knew when he got up to bat that he was going to hit the ball and this is what struck fear in the hearts of managers and pitchers.
With Pablo Sandoval getting brand new glasses that he believes will let him hit the ball better it just gives him another boost of confidence to his mojo.
Whether or not he will become a Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, or Manny Ramirez type of force in baseball will remain to be seen, but it is highly possible with his talents and abilities.
Just know that when the smiling Panda trots out on the baseball field on Opening Day with his new goggles, Giants fans can expect that the Panda will put on one hell of a show with a baseball bat.
Hey let's just hope his new glasses doesn't help him see the nearest McDonald's on the way to the park.
Just kidding of course.
In all seriousness I am expecting 2010 will be another year of great baseball from our lovable Giant Pablo Sandoval.
