Usually when we think of America's pastime we think of mowed green grass, a clean infield, white bases, a soda, hot dogs, and the warm sunny weather...unless you open your season in San Francisco.
The San Francisco Giant's opening day against the Brewers was met with cold, rainy weather. If this was a few years ago the Giants probably would have had the weather beat them, over the opposing team.
Then, here comes the Giants one glimmer of hope, "The Washington Rifle," Tim Lincecum.
Maybe it was the bad weather, maybe it was the first major game, or maybe it was the pressure of being the NL Cy Young winner. But the Cy Young wasn't validated in this game. He walked the fist batter, and beaned the second in the back.
He gave up three runs, walked three, and struck out five. Not the best start for the new face of the Giants.
Only pitching for four innings, it was clear Lincecum was uncomfortable on the mound and that became crystal clear after he threw a wild pitch.
Could it be that he might have the idea of being a hot pitcher that just got the better of him, or the fact he is now in the number one spot of rotation, when it should have arguably been that way last year? Who knows, but don't forget, his first start last year was not much better.
It's only the first game. I expect he will calm down and pitch like he did.
I think what's more amazing is that Giants did what they have been lacking the last few years, they actually stayed in it to win.
The bullpen stepped up and stopped bleeding, and the doubts that the Giants would not have hitters? Well as it looks in the first game, we shouldn't count out Rowand nor Ishikawa (2-5).
The Giants started with the season with the top rotation. By the end of the week we'll see if that's true. Cain is up next followed by "the Unit."
But for now it's good to see the Giants finally playing ball, and not softball.
