Yet again, the New York Mets have failed to fulfill their potential. In the past four years, the Mets have seen four talented teams fail. It has been a very tough stretch for the team and it's fans.
But the Mets organization is trying to right the ship. Not even a week into the team's off season, big changes have already been made. Omar Minaya has lost his job as the Mets' general manager. Manager Jerry Manuel has also been cut.
These were two changes that had to be made; the organization was not going to succeed with those two guys at the helm. Even though they had their bight spots, most of their tenure has been dark and gloomy.
With that, the Mets are now looking to fill their spots. Many names have been mentioned, but only a few are serious contenders for the job; Jerry Dipoto, Rick Hahn, Josh Byrnes, Sandy Alderson, and Terry Ryan are all on the Mets' radar for the general manager job.
Each has great baseball knowledge, as well as many other attributes, and if the Mets hire any one of those guys the fans will be pleased.
As far as I'm concerned, as long as the new general manager doesn't totally rebuild, I will support them. The Mets need a good talent evaluator, and one who has the hunger to win. The hunger to win is crucial, especially in New York.
This town demands that their teams win. When the teams win, you feel like a king; when they lose, you feel like anything but. The general manager that eventually takes the job will have to be prepared for a great challenge.
It definitely will not be easy. Stress will be a huge factor, but the good thing about New York is that when you win, it's that much better. I think that should be enough to motivate anybody who gets hired for the job. It will be interesting to see how this ends up.
The new Mets manager will soon have to choose a manager himself. Few names have been mentioned thus far for the job, mostly due to the Mets' absence at the general manager spot.
Still, two names in particular have already surfaced in regards to the open spot: Bobby Valentine and Joe Torre.
Both are viable options and Mets fans would be ecstatic to get either one of them. Not to mention, it would be a huge jolt to the team itself.
Joe Torre made comments about the Mets vacancy in the manager spot about a month ago. He was criticized for commenting on it when Jerry Manuel was still technically the team's manager. He made an apology and dismissed the rumors that he is interested in the job.
No one knows if Torre really did dismiss the rumors that he'd be coming to Queens. He could have just been covering his butt until the real off season began. Hopefully the Mets find out soon.
Bobby Valentine is considered the favorite candidate for the spot in the fans eyes. The organization is also intrigued by the possibility of bringing him back to Queens. He brought the team to the World Series in 2000, and should have never lost his job in the first place.
Valentine knows so much about baseball. He is one of the smartest men alive when it comes to baseball. Bobby has the ability to max out every single one of his players potential.
The 2000 Mets' team that he brought to the World Series, wasn't as talented as half the teams in the league, but Bobby found a way to inspire his team to play hard on every play. He preached that a player should always give their all.
He made okay players look great, and great players look even greater. Bobby has the IT factor, and I'm really hoping he comes back to Queens.
The off season has just begun for the New York Mets. Moves will be made, and stories will develop. It should be a very exciting off season for the New York Mets. They are looking at many great people to fill their vacancies and their off to a great start.
