Fans who follow Josh Hamilton know he is going to get hurt at some time during the season.
No one expected it to be during Game 11 of the young 2011 MLB season.
As I reported earlier in the 5-4 loss to the Tigers, in the second inning, a foul ball was hit and Hamilton was told to head home because no one was covering home plate.
Victor Martinez was trying to follow the foul ball and Brad Penny didn’t even leave the mound to cover home. Victor Martinez ended up making the play on Hamilton, after Brandon Inge had to lead a shuttle throw and Martinez was able to keep it in his glove and tag Hamilton out.
His arm in a sling, Hamilton expressed his displeasure of the whole incident by saying:
"It was just a stupid play," Hamilton said.
"I definitely shouldn't have done it. They had a good angle to cut me off where I was going. It was a little too aggressive. The whole time, I was watching the play and I was listening. I was like, 'Dude, I don't want to go. Something is going to happen.' But I listened to my coach (Dave Anderson) and I went."
Manager Ron Washington backed both player and third base coach, saying that Anderson made the right call because of the Rangers' aggressive play they have been displaying all season long.
Hamilton was put on the DL as soon as an MRI revealed a small, non-displaced fracture of the humerus bone in the shoulder and he will be out for 6-8 weeks according to GM Jon Daniels in a conference call.
Chris Davis of Triple A Round Rock was called up immediately.
David Murphy will be expected to play left field and Julio Borbon will expect to pick up the slack.
Don’t be surprised if you see Michael Young in the outfield for veteran leadership in the outfield.
