If Yoan Moncada was eligible for MLB's annual first-year player draft in June, he'd be in the running—if not stand as the overwhelming favorite—to be selected with the first overall pick.
The 19-year-old is the sort of elite talent that gets teams excited. As Baseball America's Ben Badler notes in the latest video to feature the teen sensation, there really is no disagreement among talent evaluators about his potential—and that any criticism of his skills is more nitpicking than anything else.
"He's worth going way over your international spending pool, in my opinion," one scouting director told MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo after watching Moncada perform at a showcase in Guatemala. "This game is about talent and Moncada is the kind of talent worth the investment."
A superb athlete with elite bat speed, tremendous raw power and the wheels to play anywhere on the field, Moncada would be a fit with nearly every team in baseball. While he's been declared a free agent by MLB, he's still waiting for clearance from the U.S. government before he can sign with a club.
