Washington Nationals Scouting New York Mets' Minor League System

According to Gordon Edes of Yahoo! Sports the Washington Nationals are scouting the Triple-A team in Buffalo, NY, and the Double-A team in Binghamton, NY.

This suggests that the Mets still have interest in acquiring first baseman Nick Johnson, considering the injury to slugger Carlos Delgado. The Nationals are evaluating pitchers Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz, and Mike Antonini. They are also still enamored with Bobby Parnell who is on the 25-man roster and coming out of the bullpen.

Now, I have to ask, why would the Mets acquire Nick Johnson? Yes, he is a very solid defender at firsst base and his lefty bat would definitely be a welcome addition, but what would they do with Johnson once Delgado returns? Who’s big-money deal sits on the bench for the rest of the season when one bat gets hot and the other doesn’t?

Why would the Mets even considering trading an Eddie Kunz or a power arm like Bobby Parnell for an injury-plagued Johnson?

I am still very much in favor of the Mets trying to pry loose Mark DeRosa from the Cleveland Indians. He can be the super utility player the Mets have lacked since the days of Joe McEwing. Plus, when Delgado comes back, DeRosa could easily switch to LF and multiple other positions.

Don’t make this move Omar—it will only be yet another mistake. But you are good at making those.
