We Like Ike: New York Mets Welcome Ike Davis to "The Show"

The New York Mets selected Ike Davis with the 18th overall pick in the 2008 MLB Draft.  Davis was a first baseman for Arizona State.  Scouts loved Davis' raw power and so did the Mets.

Big things were expected from this kid.  Despite Davis' high expectations he struggled mightily in his first year for the Mets.  He played with the Brooklyn Cyclones and couldn't manage to hit one home run.

Ike, went on to play in the Arizona Fall League and hit a lot better.  Last year, Davis was one of the biggest power hitters in the minors.  He began to raise eyebrows like the Mets expected.

Davis got a Spring Training invite to play with the major league team this year.  He did not disappoint.  He hit three towering home runs, and hit plenty of other balls hard.  Many fans were begging that the Mets bring Davis up north with them to start the season.

Davis did not get the call up north, and started the season off with AAA Buffalo.  Near the end of Spring Training, Daniel Murphy hurt his ankle when he got himself in a rundown.  The ankle was checked out and it was official that he was going to miss the first month of the season, and possibly more.

Murphy was projected to be the Mets' starting first baseman for the 2010 season until his injury.  That left Mike Jacobs and Fernando Tatis in a platoon.  Jacobs struggled mightily and recently got sent down.

That left the spot open for Ike Davis.  Davis has been raking in AAA this year.  He has three homeruns and is hitting well over .300.  This seemed like a no-brainer call up for the Mets.

Davis will be hitting sixth in the order tonight, behind Jeff Francoeur.  The Mets are opening up their ten game home stand tonight.  I'm sure Davis will get a HUGE reaction from the fans for his first at bat in the MLB.

I agreed with the Mets that Davis shouldn't have made the team for Opening Day.  I didn't want them to rush him and then have him struggle.  Now is a totally different situation though; JaKobs has been struggling and Davis has been prospering.  Easy decision, right?

This team could also use a spark.  Hopefully, Davis provides that spark and challenges Jason Heyward for the Rookie of the Year award.  It might be wishful thinking, but you have to think that when someone has as much talent as Davis.  Let's hope that tonight will be the start of a fantastic career for Ike Davis.
