According to Jason Beck via Twitter, Detroit Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland has named Will Rhymes as the starting second baseman to start the season. Rhymes gets the nod because Carlos Guillen will not be ready to start the season. Guillen will miss three-to-four weeks in April because of lingering knee issue.
Rhymes appeared in 54 games for the Tigers last season and hit .304/.350/.414 with one HR and three triples in 191 AB’s. The left-handed Rhymes did exceptionally well against left-handed pitching as he hit .351 in 40 PA’s.
With Guillen’s history of injuries, it wouldn’t shock me if Rhymes began the season as the starting second baseman and ended the season as such. Guillen is 35 now and has seen his OPS dip four years in a row. He’s a long ways away from his 2007 season.
Rhymes is hitting .271 with no HR’s in 48 AB’s for the Tigers this spring.
