World Series: It's a Sad Day When Seats Are Empty for Game One at Yankee Stadium

When I think back to the old Yankee Stadium, the first thought that comes into my mind is an animal house.

The crowd was extremely loud, extremely rowdy, and the hostile environment they created made playing there unbelievably difficult for visiting teams.

At the new Yankee Stadium, however, those boisterous fans seem to still exist; only now you can’t see them because their seats begin a good 20 rows from of the field.

Throughout the 2009 season, there was much talk about the astronomical prices the Yankees were charging for tickets.

A ticket to see a regular season game while sitting in one of those large, comfy seats in the first twenty rows – dubbed “The Legends Seats” –  would set you back $2,600 or more.

I can only imagine what the Yankees are charging for The Legends Seats during the World Series.

Whatever the cost, it appears to be a little too steep because there was an odd-looking sight at Yankee Stadium last night.

I initially noticed it during the third inning.

It was something I’d never seen before at a World Series game and it slowly but surely began to stick out like a very sore thumb.

I found myself starring at this astounding site while actually missing some of the action on the field.

There were empty seats directly behind home plate; and we are not talking about just one or two that may have been vacated by someone needing to go to the bathroom.

As the camera panned back from time-to-time, the situation down in Legends section was even worse than I had thought.

At least 20 percent of the seats were empty…during a WORLD SERIES GAME!

Sure, Kate Hudson, Kurt Russell, Alec Baldwin and Rudy Guiliani were all comfortably seated in their Legends Seats and being waited on hand and foot.

But, the fact of the matter is that 99.9 percent of loyal Yankee fans cannot afford to pay thousands of dollars for a ticket, particularly in this day and age.

Let’s not forget that the epicenter of the country’s financial meltdown is located a mere 15 miles from Yankee Stadium.

The empty field level seats looked strange during the regular season; they looked ridiculous during the playoffs; but now, during the World Series, they are just embarrassing.

Grab some lucky fans sitting just beyond the Legends Seats and move them down so at least it doesn’t look like the best seats in the house are empty during a World Series Game.

Or hire some seat fillers, for goodness sake.

I get it. The Yankees need to somehow pay for this $1.5 million dollar clone of the previous Yankee Stadium.

But wouldn’t they want to avoid the embarrassment of having empty seats starring back at the millions of televisions viewers who have tuned in for game one of the World Series?
