Yes, the Yankees have a bench problem, at least in the infield. Cody Ransom and Angel Berroa are the back ups. Ransom is young, and no one is sure he'll work, and Berroa's on a minor league deal.
There are still players on the market for the Yankees.
In my opinion, there are two options:
1. Ray Durham: The 38-year-old who has been "mulling retirement" could fit in well in New York. He is normally a good teammate, is very durable, and needs a home. The Yankees could also use him as a top-of-the order man or a middle-of-the-order man. Obviously, with this being late in free agency, there are some downfalls.
Durham is really a second baseman, and nothing else. Also, he is 38.
Don't underrate Durham. He did have a pretty good year, with about a .288 average with two teams.
Option two: Mark Grudzielanek.
The 39 year old is a great defender, winning a gold glove a year or two ago, and went to the World Series with the Cardinals.
Last year, he had a .299 batting average.
He has seen a very slow power decline, and a slight average decline, but he'll be a good ballplayer for a few years.
He can play all infield positions, although he has seen limited time at 3rd and 1st.
Gruddi may be the best option for the Yankees.
The Yankees should definitely sign a back-up before opening day.
