Since the New York Yankees' first year in 1913, they had been 30-0 when leading by three runs in the postseason.
They are now 30-1.
After leading the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 in Game Three of the ALCS, the Yankees went on to lose a nail biter in 11 innings.
SS Derek Jeter, 3B Alex Rodriguez, CF Johnny Damon, and C Jorge Posada all hit solo home runs to account for New York's four runs.
Down 3-0 in the fifth inning, second baseman Howie Kendrick hit a solo homer of his own against Yankees starter Andy Pettite. DH Vlad Guererro added a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. A Maicer Izturis sac fly scored Kendrick after he tripled in the bottom of the seventh to give the Angels a 4-3 lead.
Posada hit his homer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4.
The game would remain scoreless until backup catcher Jeff Mathis doubled to score (guess who?) Kendrick from first base to win the game in the bottom of the 11th inning.
The Angles' win cuts the Yankees' series lead in half at 2-1. It is their first loss in the 2009 postseason after going 5-0 after a sweep of the Minnesota Twins and winning the first two games of this series.
Kendrick was 3-for-5 with a triple, home run, and three runs scored.
Game Four will be on Tuesday and will feature Yankee C.C. Sabathia (on three days rest) against Scott Kazmir, who has a career record of 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA against the Bombers.
