Yankees Notes: CC, Teixeira, Posada, Pie Safety, Cotham, and Adams

Josh Tomlin, an Indians pitcher making his Major League debut, held the Yankees hitless through the first three innings, faced the minimum through six, and beat the Yankees 4-1, all while holding Alex Rodriguez at 599 home runs.

Here are some notes:

  • The Yankees have now dropped their last six games against a pitcher making his Major League debut.
  • Mark Teixeira was kept off the bases for the first time last night since June 6, a game where he struck out five times against the Blue Jays.
  • Teixeira’s line during that time: 42 G, 14 2B, 12 HR, 36 RBI, 27 BB, 22 SO, .327/.435/.642/1.076.
  • CC Sabathia went 7 IP and allowed just 2 ER, but got his first loss since May 23 against the Mets.
  • Sabathia’s line during that stretch: 11 G, 9-0 record, 2.62 ERA.
  • Jorge Posada sat out last night with an achy left knee. He could be back in the lineup tonight as the DH.
  • Marlins’ outfielder Chris Coghlan tore the meniscus in his left knee while pieing a teammate after a walk-off victory. That’s not going to stop AJ Burnett .
  • Yankees minor league RHP Caleb Cotham, who has not played this year due to injuries, will miss the rest of the season with labrum surgery .
  • Double-A Trenton’s manager doesn’t expect to see 2B David Adams return this season. He’s been out with a sprained ankle.

I’ve always wondered why the Yankees struggle so much against young rookies. My guess is that it is one of two things. 1. Playing the Yankees for the first time in your career is exciting and the adrenaline helps you pitch better. 2. The Yankees always have veteran teams and veterans rely on scouting reports more than younger players do, and the young pitcher’s scouting report is generally not too solid. Your take?
