According to MLB truth and rumors, MLB commissioner Bud Selig is considering moving the New York Yankees or Boston Red Sox to the AL Central to increase competition. This way, both teams would be able to make the playoffs as well as a team like the Rays, who are stuck behind these two powerhouses each year.
Would splitting up one of the biggest rivalries in sports be beneficial?
While it would make it easier for the better teams to make it to the playoffs, teams in the AL central like the White Sox and Indians who do not have the payroll that either the Yankees or Red Sox, would not make the playoffs as frequently.
So is this a good idea or no?
To put this in perspective, here's the average number of wins over the last three years for the Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, and Twins:
2009 2008 2007 Average
Yankees 103 89* 94 95.3
Red Sox 95 95 96 95.3
Twins 87 88 79 84.6
Tigers 86 74 88 82.6
White Sox 79 89* 72 80
*In 2008, the Yankees and the White Sox both won 89 games. Interestingly enough, the Yankees got third in the division behind the Rays and Red Sox and the White Sox won their division.
