It’s not everyday the Yankees are outbid by many teams, a few years ago they were outbid by Boston for Daisuke Matsuzaka, but that was the Red Sox and with their nearly $170 million payroll you’d expect them to outbid somebody sometime. The Blue Jays however? Come on!
Here are the details, we first heard of Adeinis Hechavarria about a month ago when rumors surfaced that the Yankees were interested in him. Then just last week it seemed like they were on the verge of signing him, but then on Sunday we heard that because of Derek Jeter blocking him at short, Hechavarria was signing with the Blue Jays.
Well it turns out that Sunday’s story wasn’t entirely true, as one of my favorite bloggers would say, it’s about the money (stupid). It turns out, according to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated , the Yankees were actually outbid on Hechevarria by the Blue Jays who offered him $10 million against the Yankees $8.5 million.
Now $8.5 million is still a lot of money, so it’s not to say that the money was the only reason, but if a team, in this case the Blue Jays, has a revolving door at shortstop for the past few years and offers you $1.5 million more, you go with that team. It still leaves the door open that it was possible the Yankees could have signed him had they make a more significant offer, although $8.5 million is a lot for a 21-year-old unproven talent.
