It's not even May yet, but the Los Angeles Dodgers' once-deeper-than-deep starting pitching staff is down to a small handful of able bodies. 

That's their excuse to go out and make a big splash. Round up the usual suspects!

Actually, let's slow things down and get on the same page first.

After a lackluster start to the season by the bullpen, the Detroit Tigers made two big moves on April 23 to try and stabilize it.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that right-handed starting pitcher Chad Billingsley will be going back on the DL with a season-ending elbow injury. This time, it will require Tommy John surgery, which is likely to keep Billingsley out for 12 months.

The Detroit Tigers chose not to bring Jose Valverde back to the team after the 2012 season, but fate has a strange way of bringing two sides together. 

Valverde will sign a one-year deal to return to Detroit, as confirmed by the Tigers' Twitter account, and he will take over as the team's closer when he gets to town:

Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman has reportedly been placed on the disabled list following a hamstring injury he sustained last weekend.

The scene signified that a horrible nightmare was over; things were going back to normal just a few days after two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three, wounded close to 200 and rocked one of America's toughest cities to its core.

Ordinarily, you could answer a question like this via simple process of elimination. What do you already have? Once you know that, you know what you need.

Except, with this Phillies team, the answer to the primary question is a bit troubling.
