MLB Power Rankings: Sunday, June 14

Just feeling a quick blog tonight after coming out of my state of shock that Trevor Hoffman is indeed human.  Here’s my current power rankings for the MLB as of tonight with a sentence on each squad.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (42-22)

Unbelievably, this team has not missed a step after losing slugger Manny Ramirez and is easily the best team in baseball right now.

2. Boston Red Sox (38-25)

Live Blog: Dustin Ackley vs. The Arizona State Sun Devils

11 days, eight of the top college baseball teams in the country, a great setting for baseball in Omaha, Neb., and the unmistakable “ping” make the College World Series one of the great and vastly underrated sporting events.
It’s truly an event that everyone should watch and probably attend if you love baseball.

One of the more interesting matchups on the second day of the College World Series is the University North Carolina vs. Arizona State University.

Johan Santana Claims He's Fine, But Is He?

Mets ace Johan Santana may be the best pitcher on the planet. He has proven himself throughout his career, first in Minnesota, and now during his first two seasons as a New York Met.

But Santana hardly looked the part of the "best pitcher in baseball" Sunday afternoon. The Yankees lambasted him for nine runs in only three innings of work during the Mets' embarrassing 15-0 dismantlement in the Bronx.

The outing was the worst of Santana's career.

Brian Bruney Rips Francisco Rodriguez for Excessive Celebration

New York Mets' closer Francisco Rodriguez, better known as "K-Rod", blew his first save of the season on Friday night against the New York Yankees.

K-Rod should have earned the save, however, as Luis Castillo dropped a potential game-ending pop-up with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. This error allowed two unearned runs to score, which gave the Yankees the win.

On Saturday, Yankees relief pitcher Brian Bruney, currently rehabbing in Double-A Trenton, was asked about K-Rod's blown save and the Yankees improbable victory.

Cincinnati Reds: Party Over

It was only a matter of time.

After winning more than they lost for the first two-and-a-half months of the season, Reds' manager, Dusty Baker's stopgap line-up cards (beau geste major injuries) are making Dairy Queen bathrooms look sterile.

The Reds have lost seven of their last 10.  They are not scoring.  They are not fielding.  They are not even getting on base to score.

Chicago Cubs Call Up Triple-A Hitting Coach Von Joshua

After another shutout and loss on Saturday to the Twins, the Cubs on Sunday made a change and called down to Triple-A Iowa for help. The Cubs didn't recall Jake Fox or another minor league player for offensive support, but rather the Iowa Cubs' hitting coach.

Von Joshua, who has been a hitting coach since 1984 and with the Iowa Cubs for the last four years, was once the MLB hitting coach for the Chicago White Sox.

Derek Jeter Tests Positive for Intangibles (Satire)

Multiple sources have reported today that Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter has tested positive and will serve a 50-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs.

Our sources have confirmed that the positive test was for a designer steroid known simply as "the glue."

"The glue" does not help develop a player's speed or strength, nor does it help players recover from injury. In fact, "the glue" does not increase physical performance at all.

"The glue" is specifically designed to enhance an athlete's intangible ability to do all the "little things."

St. Louis Cardinals: The Week That Was

It seems like a simple concept, bordering on cliche: as Albert Pujols goes, so go the St. Louis Cardinals.

The past week has made this as clear as it has ever been.

Entering the week, Pujols was riding a slump, at one point going 15 straight at-bats without a base hit. After breaking the hitless streak with an opposite way single in Florida against the Marlins, Cardinals' color commentator Al Hrabosky made a prediction that Pujols would get into a hot streak.

Good, Bad & Ugly: Bad Bounce Does In Nationals; Lose to Rays 5-4

Mets: Nothing Supernatural Sunday About Johan Santana

Johan Santana would have become the ace of the Yankees after the 2007 season, if the club agreed to include Phil Hughes in a proposed trade with the Twins. The Yanks at the time overvalued Hughes, and the deal fell through.

Now, Santana leads the Mets. On Sunday the left—hander took a historic beating in the Bronx. He allowed nine earned runs for the first time in his career in a Yankees’ 15—0 romp.

Santana allowed nine earned runs on nine hits in three plus innings and saw his ERA soar from 2.39 to 3.29.
