The Pocket

It was summer, in the late 1950s. I was a young kid about to enter the "Sandblasters", an intermediate baseball league, just a step below Little League.

My old hand-me-down ball glove was feeling it's age, so I was saving my money for a new one. The fact that all my friends were sporting new gloves may have fueled my motives as well...

Finally the day arrived when I had enough cash to plunk down $8.95 at the Montgomery Wards store and buy my very own mitt. I didn't care that it was a Hawthorne, Wards' economy "house brand".

Sometimes, Love Blooms in the Strangest Places

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature’s law is wrong it
learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

Sports and the “Unimportant”: Baseball's Home Plate

I’ve been thinking a lot about the rubber polygon at the apex of the baseball diamond known as home plate. The game of baseball simply revolves around this tiny stadium landmark.

It is treated with both respect and disdain. It is treated as both “unimportant” and as the ultimate goal.

The ball players address the plate as they approach when they take their turn to bat. It’s with reverence and a bit of trepidation with which they step up to the plate.

Bleacher Report Fantasy League: How Not to Win in Fantasy Baseball

Bleacher Report fantasy baseball gurus Scott Fender and Collin Hager of the Elmhurst Pub Roundtable put together a Bleacher Report fantasy baseball league for some of the brightest minds in fantasy baseball to fight it out for a championship.

Now I'm a huge baseball guy, but my passion for the sport has waned a little bit even with the Phillies' World Series Championship.
