The booing of New York Mets third baseman David Wright is unfortunately becoming a common occurrence at Citi Field.

In typical New York Mets fashion, the opposite of what was expected is now becoming a reality.

If someone were to tell you last February that Jason Bay and David Wright would be the problem during the early days of the 2010 season and not the pitching staff, you would have probably looked at them as if they had spent the last 12 months on the moon.

But as we should have expected, the opposite is once again ringing true with this ball club.

The event occurred after my college career was over and I was several seasons into one of the various semi-pro leagues I played in during the summer. Make no mistake about the quality of "summer ball," as these were some of the most competitive seasons we ever played. A regular season was usually a 40-game schedule played over 60 days, then playoffs.

A great start can do wonders for a player.

For some, it is the fulfillment of hard work, whether it be a new workout regiment, a changed approach at the plate, or new found work ethic in the field.

For others, it is merely a flash in the pan, a one or two week hot streak where the player goes right back to being the man we expected as the season begins.

To start 2010, there are many players off to great starts. Some, like Utley, Pedroia, and Pujols are expected, as they are great, MVP-caliber players who are starting the season off right.

Early in Saturday's game, which I believe lasted about 48 hours, Jerry Manuel was interviewed by Tim McCarver and Kenny Albert.  Manuel stated that the Mets have been competitive in most of their games and if they continue to do so, things should even out.

I actually agree with Jerry somewhat.  They haven't seemed over-matched in any series so far.  Two of their seven losses have gone into extra innings.

The New York Mets season began Monday afternoon at Citi Field against the Florida Marlins. Everyone from their fans to others around baseball have had concerns about the Mets' 2010 season due to early injuries, as well as a suspect starting rotation. For at least one day, however, those concerns were put on hold and the Mets came away with an opening day victory.

As I did following the Yankees opener in Boston, after each game I plan to post a quick recap.

Opening Day optimism, there is nothing like it in sports.  Cubs fans have thrived on it for over 100 years.

This is, by far, my favorite time of the year on the sports calendar.  The snow has melted, the grass is turning green, and I can start to hear the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd.

Every year, baseball fans all across the country do the same thing: We all make predictions. While most people just let their predictions come out vocally, I have decided to post mine on here for the entire world to see.

My goal is to come back to this article at the end of the season and see how I have done. Right now, I am predicting that at least 20 of my predictions will come true.
