Florida Marlins

Reading as much as I could find on the subject over the past month or two I came to only one conclusion:

Andrew McCutcheon, J.A. Happ and Tommy Hanson were considered by many writers and bloggers throughout the nation as the top candidates for the 2009 NL Rookie of the Year Award.

Dan Uggla has no qualms about changing teams.

Changing positions, however, is a whole different ballgame.

Uggla, 29, is due a substantial raise via arbitration, and finds himself on the trading block as a result.

On Sept. 30, 2009, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez stated Jeremy Hermida wouldn’t be playing anytime soon. Apparently, Hermida had injured an oblique muscle, and was scratched from the lineup indefinitely. I read a piece on FishStripes on the SB NationWeb site stated Hermida would probably “not make another start for the Marlins...”

In my last article on the Marlins—which you can read here —I stated that I felt the Marlins should promote in-house and bring Reid Cornelius or Scott Mitchell up from one of their minor-league affiliates to fill the pitching coach vacancy created when they moved Mark Wiley to another position within the organization.

When the Florida Marlins began their existence as a Major League franchise in 1993, it seemed as though the league had expanded to a perfect market. There was a diverse community of baseball lovers waiting to soak up the sun and take in a ball game.

The Florida Marlins often seem like a hot-bed for young prospects with considerable upside, so it’s no wonder their latest child prodigy, right-fielder Mike Stanton, seems to be on the cusp of making it to the big leagues.

When the Marlins let pitching coach Mark Wiley go along with first base/infield coach Andy Fox I wasn’t all that concerned (and if you’re concerned about either of them, they were offered positions elsewhere in the Marlins organization, so they'll be fine). While I liked Wiley, I felt the results of his work were mixed at best. As for Fox, well, his position isn’t even a huge concern in my view.

Okay, the 2009 season is over for the Marlins, and there’s a bitterness to that statement that is real, but not relevant. The squad this past year seriously disappointed only those who didn’t recognize they were playing above themselves the entire year.
