In the past week, the Mets split a four-game series with the Phillies by winning two games, before winning two out of three against the Nationals as the calendar has turned to September.

As the New York Mets embark on the final month of the 2013 season, a few things are quite clear: This year will likely mark the fifth straight losing campaign in Flushing, long-term positions aren't filled across the diamond, and, with Matt Harvey's 2014 in jeopardy, thoughts of competing next year have been shelved.

While it feels like more doom and gloom in Queens, NY, there are reasons to watch this baseball team in September.

The Matt Harvey news out of Queens, N.Y., on Monday was a blow to the Mets, game of baseball and the idea of trying to keep young pitchers healthy.

Far out of contention, the New York Mets will use the 2013 season’s final 40 games to evaluate which prospects—if any—can be key contributors for the team next season.

The New York Mets are still in rebuilding mode.

This long, torturous rebuilding process, though, seems to be nearing its end. Big-name prospects like Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler are already contributing to the major league team, and many more prospects are on the way in the next couple years. 

The 2013 MLB All-Star Futures game will take place tomorrow at Citi Field. On the field will be some of the best and brightest young stars in the game in what should be a preview of future MLB All-Star games to come.

We have already seen a number of players from the 2012 Futures game break into the big leagues. That list of players includes the likes of Manny Machado, Gerrit Cole, Jurickson Profar, Zack Wheeler and Wil Myers.

Tonight at 7:10 EDT, the New York Mets (34-45) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (42-40) will square off at Citi Field for the second game in this four-game series. 

Following last night's thrilling 5-4 victory that stretched into 13 innings, the Mets will hope to continue a run of recent play that's seen them win four of the last six. 

The New York Mets pulled a game closer to the rival Philadelphia Phillies with a 4-3 win on Friday night, but umpire Adrian Johnson didn't make it easy for them.

Matt Harvey had the game of his life for seven innings on Tuesday. His 13-strikeout performance inches him closer to being the best in the National League.

The New York Mets ace threw seven frames, giving up three hits and three runs as New York beat the Atlanta Braves, 4-3.

The New York Mets are headed for their fifth-straight losing season and another summer spent in baseball oblivion.

Despite the recent sweep of the Yankees, the Mets stand at 22-30 and nine games back of the Braves in the NL East through the month of May. The Mets have finished in fourth place in each of the past four seasons and are likely to finish in that same spot this season.
