With the Hot Stove season in full swing and rumors flying around about what the New York Mets will do in free agency, the 2014 roster is far from set.

While moves in free agency and the trade market need to be made before the Mets can be considered a potential playoff team, there is one player already on the roster whose development can push the Mets to a 2014 playoff berth: Travis d’Arnaud. 

After seven consecutive years without postseason baseball and five straight without a winning record, New York Mets fans are anxious for general manager Sandy Alderson to be aggressive on the free-agent and trade market this offseason.

A New York Mets offseason certain to prove a pillar in whatever the future holds for the franchise has been somewhat quiet thus far.  For how much longer remains to be seen, but the expectations are high.  

With the 2013 World Series underway, it will soon be time to look towards the offseason. The winter shopping season will soon be under way. There will be free agents signing with new teams; there will be trades made as clubs look to better themselves for the upcoming season.

The New York Mets will reportedly have some money to spend in free agency this winter, with some hefty contracts coming off the books. But general manager Sandy Alderson has gone on record by saying he will spend wisely and not just for the sake of signing a big-name, big-money player.

The New York Mets are a franchise that has struggled to develop a sense of consistency in any area of the organization. From injury-prone stars to changes up top, the Mets have been in a constant state of turmoil for the better part of a decade.

The Mets took a major step toward assuring a change for the better by signing manager Terry Collins to a two-year contract extension, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post:

After several weeks of rest and rehab, Matt Harvey and the Mets announced on Tuesday that he will not have Tommy John surgery yet, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

As the 2013 New York Mets limp toward the conclusion of their fifth straight losing campaign, the organization will look toward better days ahead.

With David Wright signed to a long-term deal, former top prospects like Zack Wheeler and Travis d'Arnaud forming the nucleus of their September roster and National League All-Star starter Matt Harvey on the mend due to arm trouble, reinforcements are needed to add to the puzzle in Queens for 2014 and beyond.
