This off-season, the New York Yankees' hopes of adding an additional pitcher fell through.
 
True, pickings were slim, but with the seemingly impending retirement of Andy Pettitte, it didn’t make life any easier in the Bronx.
 

The Yankees missed on Cliff Lee. They didn't act on Carl Crawford. Zack Greinke landed somewhere else. Many think it is doom and gloom for the Yankees. Instead, it's all about the boom...the lineup. In 2010, the Yankees led the league in runs (859), RBIs (823) and OBP (.350). They were amongst the leaders in homeruns, OPS, hits.

In 2011, expect things to get even better with a healthy ARod, Posada being a full-time DH, Gardner improving and Cano no longer a slow starter.

There were conflicting reports this weekend that the New York Yankees were actually discussing whether or not they should bring in one-time Boston Red Sox villain and now free agent outfielder Manny Ramirez.

It was first reported on Thursday night, December 23, by YES Network’s Jack Curry that the Yankees were internally debating if they should sign Ramirez.

On Sunday, December 26, George A. King III of the New York Post reported that the Yankees do not have interest in Ramirez.

The last coals have just about burned out in the Hot Stove for this winter.

The New York Yankees made no significant trades or free agent signings.

As a result, Yankee fans should be very concerned about the upcoming season.

To begin with, Brian Cashman and the rest of the Yankee brass put all their eggs in one basket and nothing hatched.  It is well documented that the primary gameplan was to sign Cliff Lee and they failed. The only good thing that can be said about Lee is that he left the American League.

Tino Martinez was one of the greatest Yankee first basemen and should be in the Hall of Fame.  He had a career that spanned 16 seasons, including four World Series titles.  He is eligible for the Hall of Fame this season, and the voters should consider him.

Tino Martinez’s stats were not outstanding.  However, he did drive in over 1,000 runs over the course of his career, and was consistently one of the best overall first basemen in the game.

Change is scary and unsettling, especially when it is not by choice.

The 2010 off-season did not work out the way the New York Yankees had hoped. The franchise heads into a New Year having failed to acquire ace Cliff Lee or any other highly sought free-agent players.

Let's get one thing straight right now.

Everybody knows the longer Andy Pettitte waits to decide, the more likely he is to pitch again next season. It's been awhile, so we're not asking you for anything extra there. We're pretty sure he'll make the right choice for all concerned...

On the mound:

The Yankees will be fine without Cliff Lee. The Yankees don’t NEED Cliff Lee. Would they have liked to have signed him? Of course. Who wouldn’t have? Having C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, a young 19-game winner in Phil Hughes and possibly Andy Pettitte should be enough for the Yanks. They have a young pitcher in Ivan Nova who, if he fixes his sixth inning troubles, should be a solid pitcher.

The New York Yankees have made small signings this year, especially after they missed out on the Cliff Lee Sweepstakes.

Players include Russell Martin, Luis Vizcaino, and Pedro Feliciano.

And if you look at it in a positive way, this is still a similar lineup compared to the 2010 team when they reached the American League Championship Series.

Adding to that, there is money that can be spent on even more signings, which can be critical.

But for now, here is the projected lineup and starting rotation of the New York Yankees, for the 2011 season.
