This Major League Baseball offseason, while slow to build up, has started to make many large splashes. Recently, Adam Dunn signed a contract with the White Sox, and Troy Tulowitzki agreed to a massive extension with the Rockies.

While free agents are being signed, players are being traded. What is particularly interesting about the rumor mill for trades this year is that many of the players there were once considered untouchable. No one saw Jose Reyes leaving the Mets five years ago, or even last year, and likewise for Zack Greinke.

Derek Jeter has been the face of the Yankees franchise for years now.  He is the captain of the Yankees and it would just seem plain weird with him in another jersey other than the pinstripes.

Although it may seem weird to picture that for some fans, it's quickly becoming a reality.

Here are a few reason why Derek Jeter will not be back with the Yankees next season.

Like most sports, a head coaching change means a complete overhaul of the entire coaching staff. While Buck Showalter used Dave Trembley's crew for his time in August and September to finish the season, Showalter has spent the last few months figuring out who he wants to help him in the rebuilding effort.

The adventure took a bit longer than expected—probably because there were so many managerial spots available—but Showalter finally has the guys he wants. 

This is quite an impressive group.

Here’s a fact: The 2010 Mariners were pretty miserable. Aside from the expected contributions from Ichiro, Felix and Gutierrez, the rest was hard to watch. I’m an expert on the subject of how sore this made your eyes, having only missed 10 games this past season (and I thank my lovely girlfriend for those 10 blissful days).

So, what might 2011 bring? Could it get better before it gets worse? Could an improving AL West further bury the Mariners?

Well, by golly, pull up a seat and have a listen.

Throughout MLB history there have been countless examples of irresponsible overspending. With no salary cap, general managers are able to throw money around like they’re playing Monopoly, only I’m not that careless while playing a game.

This is the sport that saw Alex Rodriguez sign two contracts valued at over a quarter billion dollars. A sport where eight teams have nine-figure payrolls. A sport where one player can out-earn an entire team.

As we journey deeper into the winter months, the swirling trade rumors begin to intensify. Already, the Giants dumped the world series MVP Edgar Renteria, Adrian Beltre left the Red Sox for places unknown and Zach Greinke made it public that he wants to play "for a winner."

Several teams are in the market for a shortstop of Jose Reyes' status, and after a sub-par season last year he might be a bargain for a Mets squad trying to downsize their salary cap space.

If 2010 was the year of the pitcher, it is only natural that it was the worst year in recent history to be a designated hitter.

Jim Thome of the Minnesota Twins and David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox had their usual strong seasons, but for over half of the American League, having a DH did not seem to do much good at all.

American League designated hitters posted a .758 OPS in 2010, worse than the average AL left fielder, right fielder or first baseman. To put that figure into perspective, DHs in the AL had averaged an OPS of at least .775 in every season since 1993.

To be clear, in no way do I think the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter will part ways. He’s been the face of the franchise for over a decade, free from controversy, and a consistent performer.

The Yankees want and need him back. Only Miguel Tejeda and Orlando Cabrera would be adequate free agent replacements if you ask me. Followed by Jhonny Peralta and Juan Uribe, if they want to get a bit younger at the position.
