How I Would Improve the Washington Nationals As Their General Manager

The strangest thing just happened to me.

A few minutes ago, I received a call from Nationals’ team President Stan Kasten. He said that Mike Rizzo was fired by the Lerner family, after being found walking aimlessly along the Beltway, wearing nothing but a Mets’ cap.

Kasten told me Rizzo could have survived the “naked” part, but wearing the oppositions’ colors was a deal breaker.

Washington Nationals See Minor League All-Stars As Hope For The Future

The Topps Company, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, named their 2009 Class A All-Stars today, and two Washington Nationals prospects were on the team.
Shortstop Danny Espinosa, who plays for Potomac of the Carolina League, was named to the team. From the press release:
Danny Espinosa (22), of Santa Ana, Calif., scored 90 runs for the Potomac Nationals, tops in the Carolina League.

Spring Training: It's Like Heaven, Only Better

Thanksgiving Day has a very special meaning to me. Oh sure, there are family and friends and turkey and football. But that's a given.

However, in my life, Thanksgiving is all about baseball. It was on that day 24 years ago that I left the blizzards and barren trees, the yellow grass and the smoking chimneys of middle-America for Southern Florida and year-round Spring Training.

Washington Nationals' Stephen Strasburg Doesn't Need Surgery

The good news is that Stephen Strasburg doesn’t need surgery on his injured knee . The bad news is that this is the second injury for the pitching phenom and it has the potential to linger for years.

Arizona Fall League Championship

Baseball season at the major league level has been over for a couple of weeks now but for fans in Arizona there have still been games played in the Arizona Fall League. All of that ends today with the conclusion of the Arizona Fall League Championship.

The Arizona Fall League Championship pits the two teams with the best records facing each other at Scottsdale Stadium. For the sixth consecutive year one of those teams is the Phoenix Desert Dogs.

Washington Nationals Hope To Build Foundation For Winning

The Washington Nationals announced today the hiring of Jim Riggleman's 2010 field staff.
Some of the names we knew.  Others?  Not so much.  But the new names certainly aren't new to the skipper, each having extensive experience working alongside Riggleman at various points in their careers.
Returning are Rick Eckstein (hitting coach), Steve McCatty (pitching coach) and Pat Listach (infield/third base coach).
The new hires are John McLaren (bench coach), Dan Radison (first base coach) and Jim Lett (bullpen coach).

Washington Nationals Must Extend Adam Dunn's Contract before Salaries Go Crazy

If the Washington Nationals are planning on extending the contract of first baseman Adam Dunn, they had better do it soon because it looks as though the period of contractual sanity is over.

Stephen Strasburg To Miss AFL Start

Stephen Strasburg must really not want to have people see him pitch on a national level.

Strasburg missed the nationally televised Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game because of a strained neck muscle last month. Now he's going to miss his start on Saturday in the Arizona Fall League championship game.

That game will be televised on the MLB Network as well.

Strasburg will miss his start on Saturday because of a twisted left knee. That just sounds painful.

Josh Willingham: What's His Trade Market?

In Ken Rosenthals’ Latest Buzz From The MLB Offseason piece on FOXSports.com , he mentions that the Washington Nationals are receiving strong interest in OF Josh Willingham.

I have always liked Willingham and have believed he has been one of the more underrated players in the game for the last couple of years. I guess underrated comes with the territory when you play for the Florida Marlins and the Nationals.

With Ian Desmond Set to Start for Nationals, What Can We Expect in 2010?

It didn’t take Jim Riggleman long to make his first decision as full-time manager of the Washington Nationals.

Starting shortstop Christian Guzman will be moved over to second base in 2010. The Nationals became concerned with Guzman’s range at short last year, and now coupled with off-season surgery on his throwing shoulder, it makes sense for the Nationals to move Guzman to second base.

Guzman’s move to second base presumably opens the door for Ian Desmond to take over the starting shortstop job for the Nationals in 2010.
