It’s been a very bad week for these power players. When their teams counted on them, they left helmets on the field instead of driving in runs. It’s dark in the basement; maybe they can find the light switch.
1. OF Curtis Granderson NYY
It wasn’t the best week for New York’s newest acquisition. He was hitless in seventeen at-bats this week.
2. OF Jason Heyward Atl
Atlanta’s “Chosen One” has been terrible this week. He was only able to pull off one hit in twenty plate appearances. Heyward has apparently been dealing with shin splints, which may have been a distraction at the plate.
3. 2B/3B Placido Polanco Phi
Polanco has two hits in twenty at-bats. His .095 AVG is dreadful and he couldn’t contribute a run the entire week.
4. OF Jason Kubel Min
Kubel is hitting .111 with eighteen failed attempts of superstardom. The Minnesota outfielder only had two hits this week but managed to send six across the plate to save some face.
5. OF Nate McLouth Atl
McLouth only dredged up two hits this week. He is carrying around a .118 AVG with only two RBI in the last seven days of play. McLouth rode the pine a lot this week and watched the games from the dugout.
6. 1B Derrek Lee ChC
Chicago first baseman is hitting only .133 in thirty rounds in the batters box. Even a homerun being one of his few hits wasn’t able to save him from making the slump list.
7. 1B Mark Teixeira NYY
Mark Teixeira should be in the Hall of Fame of April hitting slumps. He makes the list for a third straight time. There’s no need to panic, this is Teixeira doing what he normally does to kick off a season.
Teixeira was only three for twenty-two this week leaving him with a .136 AVG.
8. 3B/2B Chone Figgins Sea
Figgins only hit .136 this week with twenty-two tries. The Seattle newcomer has only been able to reach base on walks.
9. DH David Ortiz Bos
It has gotten bad for “Big Papi”. He hit .182 this week and was only able to drive in two runs. The Red Sox have already begun taken steps to fill Ortiz’s void with Lowell and Victor Martinez stepping in as designated hitter. Ortiz has seen a lot of days off lately.
Ortiz, who was once revered as one of the game’s best clutch performers, was pulled with the bases loaded with the game on the line.
The only bright spot for Ortiz this week was a home run. But I wouldn’t count on that as a turn around.
10. SS Yunel Escobar Atl
Escobar hit .143 in twenty-one chances. The only way he has contributed to the Braves this week was with his four walks.
Escobar has moved into the leadoff spot, which has been the black hole for Atlanta hitters.
