Derek Holland To Make 2010 Debut

With Matt Harrison heading to the DL, Derek Holland will be recalled to start against the A’s this week, according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (click here for the article).

Holland has been dominant at Triple-A this season, going 4-1 with a 0.93 ERA over six starts (38.2 innings) in the Pacific Coast League. He had put his control on display, with 37 strikeouts vs. seven walks (for more on Holland’s early season success, view our recent write-up on him from our Prospect Tracker by clicking here ).

It’s easy to shy away from Holland giving his 6.13 ERA over 138.1 major league innings in 2009, but that would be a huge mistake. Now that he’s back, the 23-year old left-hander has the potential to stick for the long-term. Heading into the season, his minor league career ERA was 2.69 and WHIP was 1.07, to go along with a 10.0 K/9.

With the A’s on the schedule, he definitely has the potential to post a solid outing. Generally I am in favor of avoiding a pitcher making his first start, but given his past experience, his Triple-A success and the match-up, I certainly could see using him this week, depending on the other options available to you. I definitely would grab him in all formats, at least to stash away, if you have the room on your bench.

What are your thoughts on Holland?  Is he someone that you think is worth owning?  Why or why not?
