Trades went down left and right last week during Major League Baseball’s annual winter meetings.

Unfortunately, none of those deals involved notable prospects.

Well, that changed on Monday when the Chicago White Sox acquired third baseman Matt Davidson from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for closer Addison Reed.

The Seattle Mariners have already made plenty of noise this winter, and if early signs are any indication, they'll continue to be busy until spring training.

The moves have not only been unexpected, but monumental as well and heavily focused on hitting. A new skipper is at the helm and a new superstar in town. 

The following moves are the biggest ones made by the Mariners so far, with their grades reflecting the quality of player/coach and value of their contracts.

Even with most of the top free-agent targets off the board, teams are still looking to fill important roster voids.

And while remaining free agents like Shin-Soo Choo, Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez would have big impacts on their new prospective teams, general managers will still need to fill roster spots with lesser, veteran options too.

Taking performance-enhancing drugs and lying about his age apparently did not suffice for Miguel Tejada.

Third baseman Juan Uribe is reportedly headed back to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a two-year deal after testing free agency.

For some position groups on the MLB free-agent market, it's down to slim pickings following the torrid pace of the offseason action so far. For other spots on the diamond, there are still several marquee players available after the ho-hum winter meetings wrapped up earlier this week.

Many of baseball’s top prospects are playing in the Australian, Dominican, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Venezuelan winter leagues this offseason as they look to get a head start on the 2014 season and improve their chances of cracking an Opening Day roster.

Many have pegged the New York Yankees' prolific activity this offseason as a reaction to their poor 2013 showing. This past season saw an impotent Yankees offense and a championship for the rival Boston Red Sox—both motivating factors for the team's acquisition of Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran.

This year's winter meetings were relatively quiet, at least compared to the last few years. Still, they were not without a handful of moves that could have a significant impact on the 2014 standings.

The Diamondbacks got the power bat they were after when they landed Mark Trumbo in a three-team deal, the Mariners continued to add pieces with the signing of Corey Hart and acquisition of Logan Morrison, and the Mets shelled out a two-year, $20 million deal to sign Bartolo Colon.

And then there was one.

With news Friday that James Loney has re-upped with the Tampa Bay Rays for $21 million over three years, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, there aren't many first basemen of note left on the free-agent market.
