While the 2012 draft class has tons of depth at some positions such as pitching (but what draft doesn’t?) and outfielders, it’s incredibly slim at others.

As I mentioned last week, the crop of shortstop prospects is less than impressive, and I think the fact that the Pirates have been linked to Arizona State’s Deven Marrero at No. 8 overall is a testament to this notion.

After 51 years, two months, and one day, the wait ended for the New York Mets. Johan Santana gave Mets fans what they so desperately craved: a no-hitter. 

Many of the prospects in the upcoming 2012 First-Year Player Draft (June 4-6) will be selected to fill specific needs for their MLB teams.

With that said, I present this list of ideal targets for all 30 clubs.

Drafting according to need isn't the most popular method (top talents frequently get chosen first regardless of fit), but it's an avenue worth exploring.

During the offseason, we continually heard about three international players that teams really wanted to get their hands on: Yoenis Cespedes, Yu Darvish and Jorge Soler.

Cespedes and Darvish were both signed, but teams were unable to sign Soler until he was declared a free agent.

It's been a longtime coming, but the 20-year-old outfielder was declared a free agent this morning, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Major League Baseball draft is set to begin Monday, and there's still a lot for teams to figure out between now and then.

For starters, this year has no clear-cut, No. 1 overall pick, making it a crap shoot as to who will be selected with the top five picks.

But, just like everyone else, I've come up with pick-by-pick projections for every team in the draft for the first round.

While in some instances it will be similar to other people's mock drafts, there will also be a degree of difference with mine.

So, here's a look at my projections for the first round.

The New York Mets finally have their first no-hitter in franchise history. And it only took 51 years, 8,020 games and three ballparks to do it.

The Cleveland Indians acquired Ubaldo Jimenez at the trade deadline last season, trading away Drew Pomeranz, Alex White, Joseph Gardner and Matt McBride for the Rockies ace. Jimenez picked up a lot of attention by winning 15 games in 2009 and striking out nearly 200 batters that season, only to have his notoriety taken to a whole new level in 2010.

Happiness. It's a word that's been hard to come by as a New York Mets fan the past twenty or so years. Thank you, Johan Santana. 

The Texas Rangers have been known for quite some time as a team that usually wins with their bats. They are third in Major League Baseball since 2000 in runs scored and this is a team that has only been to the postseason twice since the turn of the millennium.
