Red Sox and Angels Clear Benches

The Red Sox and Angels game took a brief respite today in the second inning. With speedy Chone Figgins on second and one out, Red Sox SP Josh Beckett had the Angels' Bobby Abreu behind 1-2 in the count.

With the threat of a Figgins steal Beckett looked back at second four times, leading to Abreu calling time, which was granted just as Beckett began his delivery, as you can see above.

What happened next led to four Angels ejections.

Houston Astros' Mark Saccomanno Close To Making Dream a Reality

Houston Astros prospect Mark Saccomanno fulfilled his lifelong dream on September 8, 2008 by putting on a big league uniform for the first time.

The native Houstonian spent his childhood rooting for the Astros and left a memorable impression at Minute Maid Park during his major league debut.

No Bullpen Equals No Defense

Last year, Johan Santana had to deal with pitching, knowing he wasn't guaranteed the bullpen would hold his win for him. Today Johan had 13 strikeouts and didn't allow any earned runs but still got the loss. His ERA is somewhere around 0.71, but he still has a 1-1 record.

And this brings us to Daniel Murphy. Daniel made the error that lead to the two unearned runs that lost the game. It came on a deep fly ball the Murphy would have caught right at the wall, if he had made the catch.

Tomorrow night at 7:10, a New York Met will toe the rubber and fire the first ever regular season pitch to the Padres' leadoff hitter. Wouldn't you think that the $157 million arm of Johan Santana should be making that pitch?

Well, he isn't.

Mets fall to Marlins 2-1, Can't overcome costly error in pitchers' duel

The New York Mets fell to the Florida Marlins on Sunday by a score of 2-1, despite an outstanding performance by Met starting pitcher Johan Santana.

Santana, who is now 1-1 on the season, took a loss in a start for the first time since June 18, 2008 despite striking out 13 batters in seven innings and allowing only three hits. The two runs scored on the Mets were not charged to Santana.

Not So Cleveland: Indians Looking For First Win

The Cleveland Indians are going into the day winless. They are one of two teams that are—the other team is the Washington Nationals. The Indians came into the season as favored to win the Central Division with Cy Young winner Cliff Lee leading the team in pitching.

The Indians made a few key offseason signings also, including solid pitcher Carl Pavano, who was less than impressive in his first start—only going one inning and allowing nine earned runs.

Giants Starting Pitching Rotation

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants' final few roster decisions hinge mostly on how many pitchers the team will carry to start the season, and a 12-man staff appears to be most popular with team officials.

"We are really leaning more toward 12 at this point," manager Bruce Bochy said Friday, "but that doesn't mean it couldn't change in the next couple of days."

The Giants don't have to announce their Opening Day roster until Sunday at noon.

Earlier this spring, the Giants appeared to favor opening with 11 pitchers to have greater flexibility among the position players.
