Here’s a look at the unheralded players who played well yesterday.
Pat Burrell, Tampa Bay Rays
Pat the Bat went three-for-four with a double. He’s hitting .270, but has just five RBIs.
Jeff Niemann, Tampa Bay Rays
Niemann kept the Red Sox’ bats quiet giving up two runs on five hits in seven innings of work. He’s 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA.
Willie Harris, Washington Nationals
Willie went two-for-four with a HR and four RBIs. He’s hitting just .217 on the year, and isn’t getting enough ABs to merit consideration.
Craig Stammen, Washington Nationals
Stammen toyed with Colorado giving up two runs on five hits over eight innings. He had five Ks. He lowered his ERA to just 8.16. I’d wait for him to throw more games like last night before I would take a chance on him.
Jose Bautista, Toronto Blue Jays
Bautista smacked a pair of HRs to go along with his five RBIs. He sports a .216 average. Half of his 10 RBIs came tonight so don’t get carried away when you see he’s among the leaders in that category.
Brandon Morrow, Toronto Blue Jays
Morrow went seven innings against the Royals for the win. He gave up just one run on three hits with eight Ks. He has 16 Ks through three starts, which is solid, but sports a 7.31 ERA so buyer beware.
Marlon Byrd, Chicago Cubs
Byrd was one of the few Cubbies to show up. He went three-for-four with a run to raise his average to .286.
Ike Davis, New York Mets
Ike made a splash with the Mets going two-for-four with an RBI in his debut.
Randy Wells, Chicago Cubs
You can’t blame Wells for the Cubs’ loss. He went six innings giving up one run with five Ks. He took a no-decision and sports a 2.45 ERA.
Jonathan Niese, New York Mets
Niese did not factor in the decision either. He went 5 2/3 innings giving up one unearned run with seven Ks. His 4.32 ERA is solid, but his 1.86 WHIP is brutal.
Brad Penny, St. Louis Cardinals (pictured)
Penny really likes the National League. He improved to 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA after holding Arizona to two runs over seven innings. He struck out five.
Rodrigo Lopez, Arizona Diamondbacks
Lopez got a no-decision despite allowing two runs over seven innings. His ERA sits at 3.50.
Dontrelle Willis, Detroit Tigers
He was slapped with the loss, but Dontrelle gave up just two runs on four hits over six innings. His ERA is 4.24.
Juan Uribe, San Francisco Giants
Uribe continued his torrid pace. He went two-for-three with a HR to bring his average to .348.
Clayton Richard, San Diego Padres
Richard got a no-decision after allowing one run with five Ks in 6 1/3 innings. His ERA is 3.37.
Casey Kotchman, Seattle Mariners
Kotchman went two-for-four with a HR and three RBIs. He’s hitting .286 with 12 RBIs.
Doug Fister, Seattle Mariners
Fister improved to 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 0.84 WHIP after holding Baltimore to one run on three hits over seven innings.
Potent Middle Relievers :
Luke Gregerson, San Diego Padres: two Ks in 1 2/3 IP (seven Ks, six IP)
