Fantasy Baseball Injury Report for April 3 – Jimenez, Longoria & More

The season is only a few days old, but there are certainly plenty of injuries that need discussing.  Let’s take a look at the latest:

Ubaldo Jimenez – Colorado Rockies – According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post (click here for the article), Jimenez is in jeopardy of missing his scheduled start for Thursday against the Pirates.  Renck says that, “A cut on his right thumb cuticle prevented him from properly gripping the ball.”  It certainly helps to explain why he struggled on Opening Day (6.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 1 K).  Monitor the news in the coming days if you are in daily leagues, but be prepared to toss him on the bench just in case.  At this point he’s a pretty big risk.

Evan Longoria – Tampa Bay Rays – We discussed this in this morning’s Around the Majors (click here to view).  It appears to be a lock that he misses about a week at this point due to a sore left oblique, but after that is a question mark.  The Rays are certainly going to be willing to sit him for an extra few days, because if he comes back too early and re-aggravates the injury he could be on the sidelines for a month.  He should be on your bench at this point.  We’ll update his status next week, but those in weekly formats have to consider him questionable for Period Two.

Matt Holliday – St. Louis Cardinals – An emergency appendectomy has put him on the shelf for an undetermined amount of time.  While the Cardinals are trying to be optimistic, having not yet placed him on the DL, it is hard to imagine him returning before mid-to-late April (at least two weeks).  Obviously, keep him stashed and hope for the best.  For more on our thoughts on Holliday’s injury, click here.

Mike Stanton – Florida Marlins – He suffered a hamstring injury, though the early word is that it is just a minor one.  Joe Frisaro of MLB.com (click here for the article) reported over the weekend that “The team clearly is going to be careful with the 21-year-old slugger, who missed a majority of Spring Training with a right quad strain.”  There is a chance that he is able to return to the lineup on Tuesday, but we are just going to have to watch the news closely and hope for the best.  Those in daily leagues should have him on the bench until further notice.

Brian Wilson – San Francisco Giants – According to the San Francisco Chronicle (click here for the article), Wilson threw off a mound on Thursday and is close to returning.  Andrew Baggarly (via Twitter) adds that, “Bochy said Brian Wilson might be activated after Sunday’s simulated game if all goes well. He’s eligible Wednesday.”  Original reports had him throwing twice before returning, but that no longer appears the case.  It appears those in weekly formats should have him for the next scoring period barring a setback.

Mat Latos – San Diego Padres – According to the team’s official website (click here for the article), Latos threw off a mound late last week and felt fine in doing so.  The article also says that, “Latos will then pitch in a Minor League game on Monday. The Padres will determine his next move after that.”  He will also need a minor league rehabilitation start, so he’s probably at least a week or two away yet.  Still, fantasy owners can exhale as it appears that he has avoided a major injury.  In fact, on Saturday the San Diego Union Tribune had a quote (via Twitter) from Latos after a throwing session saying, “I haven’t felt that good all spring.”  Keep him stashed in all formats as it appears like he will return in about ten days.

Stephen Drew – Arizona Diamondbacks – Drew is nursing himself back from an abdominal injury and is considered day-to-day.  At this point all we can do is monitor the news and see what happens.  In daily formats he should be sitting on the bench until further notice.

Brandon Morrow – Toronto Blue Jays – According to the team’s Twitter feed, “Morrow to make start in Dunedin on Thursday”.  That’s good news and means he could be back in time to make his turn in the rotation after that.  It’s looking like a mid-April return if things go well, so just keep him on the bench for now.

Grady Sizemore – Cleveland Indians – According to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer (click here for the article), “Grady Sizemore and Joe Smith are expected to play in an exhibition game between Class AA Akron and Class AAA Columbus on Monday in Columbus.”  For those who took a flier on him on draft day, it appears that he’s getting closer to returning.  Just sit tight for now.

Luke Scott – Baltimore Orioles – He suffered a strained groin, but according to Brittany Ghiroli (via Twitter), “Scott targeting wed, doesn't think it's a DL situation.”  That’s great news for fantasy owners, as Scott is a solid power option in all formats.  Those in daily leagues should keep him on the bench for now.  In weekly formats, it appears that he’ll be available to scoring period two, but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.

Shane Victorino – Philadelphia Phillies – He suffered a calf injury on Saturday and was held out of the lineup on Sunday.  Time will tell, but keep a close eye on the news over the next few days.
