Fantasy Baseball Monday Lineup Decisions: Sunday Transaction Recap

Yesterday turned out to be a heavy day for transactions that may have an impact on fantasy lineups for the coming week. Let’s take a look.

Rick Porcello Was Demoted to Triple-A

Part of me wants to say that it’s about time.

He has been awful this season, with a bloated ERA (6.14) and a complete lack of strikeouts.

Yes, some of his struggles have been due to poor luck (.350 BABIP, 61.7 percent strand rate), but when you are posting a 4.2 K/9, it really doesn’t matter.

He has shown little to no potential upside in the strikeout department, and this demotion should leave you cutting him completely.

Edwin Encarnacion Was Demoted to Triple-A

He returned with a bang, but he has been struggling ever since.

Third base is a weak position, so it’s a blow, but he should be back at some point.

Don’t just assume that Jose Bautista will assume full-time 3B duties, as one of the requirements for the player they recalled was that they could play third.

That meant that Brett Wallace was again passed over (despite being able to make time for him by moving Bautista to 3B and playing Adam Lind in the outfield).

It appears that Jarrett Hoffpauir (.328, 9 HR, 43 RBI, 42 R, 3 SB) will be recalled from Triple-A. This is his fifth consecutive season seeing time in the Pacific Coast League, so I can’t get too excited over him.

Jenry Mejia Was Demoted to Double-A

Finally the Mets have realized where his true value lies.

He will be stretched out to work as a starting pitcher and eventually should return to the Major League.

If you are in a keeper league, he’s certainly worth stashing immediately.

As a middle reliever he held no value, but as a starter he has a ton of potential.

Jason Castro Was Recalled from Triple-A

Only those in two-catcher formats should care about this one, as Castro is no Carlos Santana at the plate.

In 211 AB at Triple-A this season he has hit .265 with 4 HR, 26 RBI and 31 R.  He has a good eye too (34 K vs. 32 BB).

Clearly he wasn’t blowing away the minor leagues, but Houston catchers have not been all that impressive this season and have allowed Castro a shot at the big leagues.

Unless you are desperate, however, I wouldn’t bother with him. (For more on Castro, check out my preseason write-up on him by clicking here )

What are your thoughts on these moves? Which has the biggest fantasy impact?
