Fantasy Baseball Spring Storylines: March 3

It’s been just two days since the start of spring games, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some story lines already forming. Let’s take a look at a few stories from yesterday’s games that are certainly worth noting for fantasy owners:

Nice opening outing for Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman, striking out three over two shutout innings (he also allowed a hit and a walk). He started the game against Toronto, so he faced the likes of Aaron Hill, Adam Lind and Vernon Wells.

It’s early, obviously, but at least his success came against Major League hitters and not Single-A prospects. This should put him on your radar, though it’s still too early to make any type of move on him. He has the potential to become a late round flier with a strong Spring, however.

Jason Heyward went 1-2 with one RBI and one R, hitting fifth in the Braves' lineup (he also drew a walk). That puts him at 2-3 with three walks in his first two Spring Training games. He’s got a long ways to go to winning an everyday job, but you have to like his early results.

While Franklin Gutierrez was out of the Mariners' lineup, it is interesting to note that the middle of the lineup was instead Milton Bradley, Ken Griffey Jr. and Jose Lopez, in that order. This needs to be watched closely. We’ve already discussed Lopez’ problems scoring runs (click here to read), but if he’s hitting fifth in a weak lineup, you might as well write him off in the category.

The Oriole's Josh Bell, No. 44 in our Top 50 prospects in the Rotoprofessor 2010 Fantasy Baseball Draft Guide (click here to purchase), opened his spring with a bang, going 2-2 with two HR and three RBI.

The Orioles brought in Garrett Atkins and Miguel Tejada to handle 1B and 3B, but an injury to either would open the door for Bell to make an impact. Those in AL-only and deep dynasty leagues should certainly have him on their radar, while others should keep the name in mind. We’ll talk about him in more detail in the near future.

What are your thoughts on these story lines? Which intrigues you most?
