The agent for Barry Bonds —seen here in his current uniform and looking over his shoulder at the wreckage left in his wake—conceded today the playing days of the steroid-tainted slugger are over.
It would appear the fact every team has rebuffed the attempts of Jeff Borris to land Bonds on a Major League roster for the last two years has finally served to open his eyes and allow for reading the message not written, but chiseled, into the wall.
Baseball has no appetite for Barry Lamar Bonds.
In an article in the San Francisco Chronicle , Borris was quoted as saying, "It's two years since he played his last game, and if there was any chance he'd be back in a major-league uniform, it would have happened by now."
"When 2008 came around, I couldn't get him a job. When 2009 came around, I couldn't get him a job. Now, 2010...I'd say it's nearly impossible. It's an unfortunate ending to a storied career."
Bonds has repeatedly said he would not retire. Thus, at least he will retain the delusion of a return to the game.
Borris declined to comment on questions as to the possibility of a collusion suit against Major League Baseball. The player's union continues to keep the possibility on the table, if only to keep Bonds from getting too lonely in the delusional suite he occupies.
Hopefully, stories of Bonds rising from the ashes like a phoenix to play again don't drag on for years on ESPN akin to their fixation on Brett Favre . Instead of regurgitating non-stories repeatedly, the sports conglomerate should be dedicating that time covering the games of teams not in the major media markets or dominated by overbearing personalities.
This network, that has shown there is no limit to shameless self-promotion and celebrity fixation in an effort to chase an extra one-tenth of a rating point, simply has lost it's way when it comes to the cornerstone of it's success—Sportscenter.
It would be nice to have highlights from the entire National Hockey League on a nightly basis, not just Pittsburgh , New York , & Philly . Then again, the NHL no longer has a deal with the media giant, so if it doesn't happen on ESPN, does it really matter?
They will present highlight packages with garden variety dunks and pass them off as spectacular, but anything spectacular happening on the ice in Calgary , Colorado , or Los Angeles are non-stories to the Barons of Bristol.
The addition of studios in downtown LA, right across the street from the Staples Center, caused West Coast fans to think they would have their stories properly told as well.
Still waiting on that but one can continue to dream, right Barry?
