MLB 2011 Fantasy Baseball: Value Batting Average Options

We all want Joe Mauer, but only one owner can come away with him. Don’t fret. There are other options to give you a boost in the batting average category. All average draft positions are from Mock Draft Central.

Omar Infante, Florida Marlins: Infante hit .321 last year, which is most likely not sustainable. However, he has hit .299 over the past five years. He has second base, third base and outfield eligibility. With an ADP of 234, he’s  a nice versatile bench option.

Starlin Castro, Chicago Cubs: Castro hit .300 as a rookie. The fear of regression from a second-year player is a legitimate concern. He has the track record, though, hitting .313 in the minors, including .376 for Double-A Tennessee last year before making the jump to the bigs. His ADP is 153, which makes him a nice option if you missed out on the top-tier guys.

Placido Polanco, Philadelphia Phillies: Polanco hit .298 last year, which is right in line with his lifetime .303 average. There is nothing sexy about Polanco, but he gives you a rock solid average and a fair amount of runs and RBI. His ADP is 241, which makes him a great value.

Marlon Byrd, Chicago Cubs: Byrd hit .293 last year and has averaged .294 over the past four years. His average, plus a solid amount of runs, HR and RBI make him a nice option considering his 290 ADP.

Angel Pagan, New York Mets: Pagan hit .290 last year and .306 in 2009. He has great speed (37 stolen bases last year) and offers solid contributions in all the categories. His ADP of 240 make him a really nice value.

Scott Rolen, Cincinnati Reds: Rolen won’t win a batting title, but he’s a solid .284 lifetime hitter. Last year he posted a .285-66-20-83-1 line. His age (35) and injury history make him a risk, but he’s worth it with his 168 ADP.

Howie Kendrick, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: Kendrick hit .279 last year, but is a .295 lifetime hitter. His average should bounce back, and his double-digit HRs and SBs will be nice. His ADP is 192.

Derrek Lee, Baltimore Orioles: I know he hit .260 last year, but he hit .298 after the break. He’s a lifetime .282 hitter and has hit .301 since 2005. He should be a steal with an ADP of 231.
