Here’s an early look at the NL only 2011 Second Base rankings.
1. Chase Utley, Philadelphia Phillies
Utley may have been replaced by Robinson Cano for the top spot in mixed leagues, but in NL only leagues he still reigns supreme. Assuming his health is improved, there is no reason Utley can’t return to form in 2011.
2. Dan Uggla, Atlanta Braves
Uggla is a model of consistency, hitting between 31 and 33 HRs in each of the past four seasons. He stayed in the NL East, which should help his transition with his new team.
3. Brandon Phillips, Cincinnati Reds
A hand injury sapped him of his power, but he gutted it out to play in 155 games. He still managed to hit .275 with 100 runs, 18 HRs, 59 RBI and 16 SBs. He remains one of the best HR/SB options at the position.
4. Rickie Weeks, Milwaukee Brewers
Weeks had a great season, but like the AL’s Ian Kinsler, his talent comes with a big injury risk.
5. Martin Prado, Atlanta Braves
Prado gives you a solid average, a little pop and positional flexibility. If you missed out on the big four, he’s a decent value pick.
6. Kelly Johnson, Arizona Diamondbacks
Johnson was a disaster in 2009 but bounced back in a big way last year for the D-Backs. He’s been rock solid in three of his past four years and shouldn’t disappoint this year. He could take his game to the next level, assuming last year was just a sophomore slump.
7. Omar Infante, Florida Marlins
He does little besides hitting for average, but his positional flexibility gives him a little additional value.
8. Juan Uribe, Los Angeles Dodgers
Uribe also has multiple position eligibility. He also offers some pop, even if his ballpark isn’t ideal.
9. Ty Wigginton, Colorado Rockies
He doesn’t have a starting gig but should get enough ABs at first base, second base, third base and DH (interleague games) to make him a decent NL only third baseman.
10. Neil Walker, Pittsburgh Pirates
It’s really pick your poison time. The good news is you get Walker late, and Pittsburgh is coming around with Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, Jose Tabata and Walker.
