Rounding the Bases: April 11th

Neftali Feliz will be the beneficiary of the early season troubles of Frank Francisco.

Manager Ron Washington has announced that Feliz will take over the closer’s job “temporarily” from Francisco until he can feel confident that the Rangers closer can get people out again.

If by chance Feliz is available in your league, you should absolutely grab him because the kid has an electric arm, and as much as I like Francisco, I have to say it is possible that if Feliz succeeds he might not give this job back.

If you have Francisco, I would probably hold on to him for a little bit just to see what happens. I wouldn’t jettison him to free agency just yet.

Josh Willingham hit his first home run of the season and it was a grand slam off of Johan Santana. Every year people get a little excited about Willingham because of his power potential and every year they are disappointed either by him failing to remain consistent or failing to remain healthy, both of which happen every year.

Let someone else be the one to take the chance on Willingham unless you are looking for a very short term solution like a guy being on the DL for two weeks because this won’t last long.

Jorge Cantu has at least one hit and one RBI in every game so far this year, and he really had a big-time game on Sunday as he had a home run and five RBI to double his season total to 10.

He is someone that you got in the mid-to-late rounds in drafts, but he is a fairly consistent producer in the batting average and RBI department.  His power has fluctuated from year-to-year, but overall he is a good guy to have as a corner infielder or in your utility spot as he will keep you happy from week-to-week.

Leo Nunez has seemed to have righted the ship after blowing his first save attempt.  Nunez converted his second consecutive save, and while this one was a little more exciting than you might like, he still finished the job and struck out two batters.

Drew Stubbs continues to be productive.  Even on a day like today when he goes 0-4, he still finds a way to steal two bases.  Like we have said before, he isn’t the most talented guy, but rarely will you see a guy put forth more effort than Stubbs.

Mike Leake had a mixed major league debut.  He only allowed one run over 6.2 innings in an outing against the Cubs, but he did walk seven batters.

Leake never went to the minor leagues, but had an incredible college career.  I would like to see him strike out a few more batters, but overall, Leake has a chance to be an effective major league pitcher.

I might wait one more start before making the move on him, but he did well against a better-than-average offensive team in the Cubs so he is off to a good start.

Alex Gonzalez continued his assault on major league pitching as he hit his third and fourth homers of the season, but I urge you not to fall victim to going after a guy on a hot start.

Gonzalez hasn’t had a reasonable season since 2007 and there is no reason to think that this is going to be one.  If you need him for a short term fill-in, say a week or two, he could be okay, but you should not drop anyone worth a lick to pick up Gonzalez.

Scott Kazmir is set to rejoin the Angels rotation on Thursday, so if you have him on your DL, be sure to activate him on Wednesday in time for that start, or if he happens to be in your waiver wire you should consider grabbing him going forward.

Roy Oswalt pitched much better his second time out so the report of his demise might have been a little premature.  I am not expecting Oswalt to be a top-20 pitcher, but I think he is still a good fourth or fifth starter in your rotation.

Roy allowed just two runs over six innings with eight strikeouts.  He will no longer be the effective, consistent starter he once was, but you can still do worse than Oswalt.

Miguel Montero has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right knee sprain.  He could need surgery on the knee and could miss a fairly significant amount of time.

Montero had an MRI on the knee and will be re-evaluated on Monday and we should get a more concrete amount of time he will miss then.  Plan on not having him for this week coming up at the absolute least.
