Billy Wagner Likely to Accept Arbitration with Red Sox If Offered

The agent for relief pitcher Billy Wagner is reporting that his client may reverse his previous position and accept arbitration from the Red Sox, if offered.

This new stance represents a change of heart for the 38-year-old Wagner, who is just 15 saves from 400 career saves.

He waived his no-trade clause to accept a trade to the Red Sox prior to the trade deadline. In exchange the ball club promised they wouldn’t pick up his $8 million option for 2010—so he could pursue free agency this winter.

Seattle Mariners Bring Back Ken Griffey Jr. For One More Year

Here is what I wrote about the possibility of Ken Griffey Jr. returning to the Seattle Mariners in September:

“There has been a lot of talk recently that future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. wants to return to the Seattle Mariners in 2010. I, for one, think this is great. Griffey has earned the right to play for as long as he wants.

Ken Griffey Jr., Seattle Mariners Got It Wrong by Inking Deal For 2010

It kills me to say this, but Ken Griffey Jr. should not be wearing a Seattle Mariners uniform in 2010.

The news broke this morning that the 39-year old Kid will be returning to the tune of $2 million for next season to play an extremely limited role with the club.

Before I get into this, let me first say that Griffey is unequivocally my favorite player in the history of the game and the greatest player I have ever seen in person.

BREAKING NEWS: Ken Griffey Jr. Signing for One More Season

"The Kid" will be back for one more season in 2010.

Reports are coming out of Seattle (and Chicago) that George Kenneth Griffey Jr. will be signing with the Seattle Mariners for the 2010 season.

I know that he is not the same player that he once was, and that he doesn't add much to the roster at this point, but for the class act that he is, he deserves to go out when he wants to.

He is my favorite player of all time. And, over all major sports, he is my second favorite athlete of all time behind the great Michael Jordan.

Sammy Sosa's New White Look!

While most sports players like to adopt a different life style or put on a few pounds when they retire, Sammy Sosa has taken it a step further .

The former Chicago Cubs slugger made quite a sensation at last week's Latin Grammy Awards with his skin looking amazingly pale!

American League Hands Out Some Gold Gloves

Not only 'tis the season for surgeries, trades, and free agency, but 'tis the season for handing out some hardware.
Baseball handed out its first set of postseason awards today. The American League Gold Glove winners were announced today.

Let’s take a look at who won an American League Gold Glove in 2009:

C: Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins – .996 fielding percentage, 26 percent caught stealing percentage

Seattle Mariners Interested In Free Agent Left Fielder Jason Bay

According to Fox Sports, the Seattle Mariners are going to "kick the tires" on the availability of All-Star left fielder Jason Bay.

With the bloated contracts of C Kenji Johjima, SP Erik Bedard, SP Jarrod Washburn, RP Miguel Bautista, and 3B Adrian Beltre coming off the books, it frees up roughly $45 million in cap space for them to use.

Bay has played for the Boston Red Sox since they acquired him in a three-way deal that saw the departure of slugger Manny Ramirez.

Handful of Houston Astros Players File for Free Agency

It’s going to be a busy offseason for the Houston Astros franchise.

With reorganization and revamping on the hearts and minds of team owners and managers, the true tasks lie ahead.

Free agency, of course, is just a part of that process, as a handful of Houston Astros players have now officially filed.

Those names include: Jose Valverde, Miguel Tejada, LaTroy Hawkins, Jason Michaels, and Darin Erstad (Doug Brocail has also filed for free agency with the Astros declining his 2010 option and both Mike Hampton and Aaron Boone recently filed for arbitration).

Red Sox Vets Sticking Around: Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek Will Return for 2010

So it looks like a couple of long, long-time teammates will be teammates at least a little longer still.

Red Sox Exercise Option On Martinez, Decline Option On Gonzalez

As expected, the Red Sox have exercised their 2010 option on C / 1B Victor Martinez while declining their option on SS Alex Gonzalez.

The ballclub now has Martinez—who was acquired from the Cleveland Indians at the trading deadline for RHP Justin Masterson and pitching prospects Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price—under contract at $7.1 million for 2010.

Martinez, 30, was a hit during his two-month stint with the Red Sox, batting .336, with eight HR and 41 RBI, in 56 games with the Sox. For the season, he hit .303, with 23 HR and 108 RBI in 155 games.
