Texas Rangers: Why the Pummeling of the Rays Is No Fluke

The Texas Rangers clubbed the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0 Thursday to take a commanding 2-0 lead in their ALDS matchup.

The Rangers have never won a postseason series in the franchise's history, but that looks like it will change in 2010. Are they just a fluke, destined to burn out in the ALCS, or something bigger and more promising?

Here are 10 reasons why the Rangers a trustworthy this October.

MLB Playoffs Texas Rangers vs. Tampa Bay Rays: Ian Kinsler Extends Texas Lead

Ian Kinsler cranked a two-out, bases-empty home run in the top of the fourth inning of Thursday's Game 2 of the American League Division Series, giving the Texas Rangers a 2-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The bomb could go a long way toward earning the Rangers a far more important 2-0 leadin the ALDS, that is.

Kinsler's shot was sweet redemption after he grounded out with a runner on second base in the second inning, and came on a fastball from the homer-prone Jame Shields of the Rays.

Texas Rangers Can't Get Nelson Cruz Home

Nelson Cruz of the Texas Rangers doubled to center field off Tampa Bay Rays pitcher James Shields with one out in the top of the second inning, but the Texas offense could move him no further. Second baseman Ian Kinsler grounded out to shortstop, failing to move Cruz over to third. Mitch Moreland then flew out in foul territory to left field, ending the Texas threat.

Fantasy Baseball Playoffs: Under the Radar Contributors

It’s slim pickings now that there are just eight teams left.  Naturally, since the pool of players dwindles significantly you have to be on top of your game to come out ahead.  Here are some guys that could be under-the-radar fantasy baseball contributors.

Texas Rangers' Pitching Well-Armed for Deep Playoff Run

The age-old axiom so often quoted in baseball circles that pitching and defense win championships is just as true today as it has always been. Of course, loaded lineups and the ability to score runs in bunches are always a plus, but those aspects of a team don't always show up in the playoffs when you're facing the best pitching staffs in the league.

Cliff Lee Will Start Game 1 For The Rangers, But Who Starts Game 2?

With the Texas Rangers 10 games up in the American League West, they are already making plans for the postseason.

Cliff Lee: Could the Texas Rangers Face A First-Round Exit Without Their Ace?

A few weeks ago, the Editors at the Bleacher Report asked me to write a piece on why getting Cliff Lee was going to make the Texas Rangers World Series participants.

New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers: Pitching Prediction for A.J. Burnett

After splitting a series 2-2 with the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees head down south, deep in the heart of Texas, to face the Rangers.

The Rangers have been at the mercy of the Yankees for over a decade, and this season has been no different, as the Bombers swept the Rangers in their last meeting back in April.

The Yankees have enjoyed playing in Texas, posting a 15-4 record since 2005.

A Tale of Two Pitchers: C.J. Wilson and Rich Harden of the Texas Rangers

When this season started, I had high hopes for the Rangers pitching staff, and for the most part they have delivered.

There have been quite a few ups and downs, but in general I am quite happy with their performance thus far.

I expected Rich Harden to have a decent season and was somewhat skeptical of moving C.J. Wilson to the starting rotation.

Boy, was I wrong.

C.J. Wilson has been a great success as a starter. Despite a rough stretch of four or five games, he has pitched extremely well.

Is C.J. Wilson's Start Fantasy Baseball Fact or Fiction?

C.J. Wilson’s transition to the starting rotation has gone better than anyone could have imagined.  Who could have expected the following line through five starts:

2 Wins
32.2 Innings
1.65 ERA
1.19 WHIP
25 Strikeouts (6.9 K/9)
13 Walks (3.6 B/99)
.279 BABIP

We’ll notice right away that the BABIP is not an unrealistic number.  It is above average so a falloff is possible, but it’s not a guarantee either.  That’s something that you have to like seeing.
