Fooling with Statistics

For many years, Brooklyn's National League team was considered one the game's best power-hitting units.

There was one season of interest in which they led the league in home runs, and their first baseman was the home run champion by a wide margin.

Brooklyn's Power Dominated

Brooklyn was dominant. The team home run total was 12 percent greater than that of the runner-up. Their home run champion led the second place finisher by 20 percent.

White Sox Hope Gordon Can Blast It Like Beckham

It’s only June 6, but it’s already been a big month for call ups for some of the game's top prospects.

Top prospects such as Andrew McCutchen, Tommy Hanson, and White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham have gotten the call to the big club so far this month. Perhaps the most intriguing of those three is Beckham.

Mets-Nationals: Hanrahan, Cousins blow the game for the Nationals

I was always raised to never blame a loss on the officials, and while the umpires weren’t the reason the Nationals lost, they certainly didn’t help.

In the top of the second inning David Wright reached second base on a pop-up just outside the infield that Cristian Guzman didn’t bother to make a play on. Left fielder Adam Dunn lumbered in to try and make a play but was not able to charge nearly 200 feet in to catch the blooper.

Philadelphia Phillies: No Streaking Allowed at Dodger Stadium

The Phil’s streak was halted. I hate it when a fantasy comes to an end. That’s why I miss the 70’s. You can’t fault an era when everyone took it off and let it hang in the wind.

Now that’s an idea for a promotion at Citizens Bank Park—a different type of giveaway.  Trust me, when it comes to hot ballplayers, nothing excites me more than “giving it away,” but what if we didn’t “get” something?  What if we gave something up?

The November World Series 2001: A Candle in the Dark

We all remember where we were on September 11, 2001. I was twelve years old, in bed sick, watching SportsCenter as usual. I suddenly got bored with the current sports topic at hand and randomly switched the television to Good Morning America.

An Open Letter to John Smoltz

I will try to keep this as respectful as possible, because you are still my favorite Atlanta Braves player of all time.

I understand that you were upset after the Braves “disrespected” you back in January. I was quite upset as well.

Seriously man, you need to get over it soon. Your constant hostility and sour grapes are getting old.

Alex Rios Needs to Think Before He Acts

One of the big questions when it comes to professional athletes in modern day society is whether or not they should be role models.

In fact, I wrote a huge piece on it for school. In that piece, I gave the athletes the benefit of the doubt and basically said that these men and women are not superhuman and they are going to make mistakes, whether it be Michael Phelps getting caught smoking marijuana or Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jiri Tlusty posting naked pictures of himself on the Internet.

Randy Johnson Can Now Die a Happy Man

Randy Johnson earned career victory number 300 on Thursday against Washington and he pitched a beauty.
Johnson pitched six innings of two-hit shutout baseball. It was far from vintage Johnson as he only struck out two batters, but the historic milestone should be the cap to a brilliant career.
The other guy was pretty good too.
Jordan Zimmerman only gave up two runs on three hits over six innings. He struck out seven, but took the loss.
Meanwhile...
Chris Carpenter continued his remarkable 2009 campaign with a complete game three-hitter against the Reds.

Strasburg Vs Harper: Who Would Be the Better Franchise Player?

Both of these kids aren't even old enough to drink. One is barely old enough to legally drive by himself.  Stephen Strasburg, 20, and Bryce Harper, 16, are baseball's future. Strasburg, a starting pitcher out of San Diego State University, and Harper, a catcher out of Las Vegas High School, have both been called baseball's saviors.

In this article, I'll get an in-depth analysis of each player's strengths, and then give my opinion of which player I'd rather build a franchise around.

Red Sox Seek Stand-In for Disappointing David Ortiz

The trade winds are blowing at full force, and it's only June 5.

In the eye of the storm, you'll find the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox apparently have been shopping around players such as Brad Penny, Daniel Bard, Julio Lugo, and pitching prospect Michael Bowden—all in hopes of acquiring a strong bat to make up for designated hitter David Ortiz's lack of production.
