The Twins continued their search for backend starters and consistent relievers Wednesday when they called up Anthony Swarzak from Triple-A Rochester. Swarzak will pitch in place of the injured Glen Perkins against the Brewers on Saturday.

Many minor league watchers had been calling for this move for weeks. Swarzak's record, just 3-4, is a better reflection on the state of the Red Wings' offense than on how well he has pitched.

No, they haven't, but that's because they're looking for one.

Leadership means different things to different people, and in the realm of professional sports, that meaning gets blurrier by the win or loss.

Some athletes lead by quiet example, while others choose to broadcast their emotions to the wide world. There is a thin line between separating being "laid back" and becoming just another face on the bench, sideline or in the dugout.

I recently read an article written by a Yankee fan about how, recently, the Yankees have been in the habit of buying talent instead of developing.  The article went into a long description of how the system has changed from the 90's compared to now. 

This morning I was talking to a friend of mine about the Mets first base situation.

With Delgado on the disabled list, he was saying the Mets should try to get Mark DeRosa to take his place.

Not a bad idea, but what's wrong with Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy?

If you look at the numbers, both Murphy and Tatis are having better seasons than DeRosa.

But this goes beyond the numbers.

Mark DeRosa is a nice player, and I would like to have him on my team.

Dontrelle Willis isn’t back. Let’s get that straight right out of the box.

The demons aren’t gone. Some of the dragons still lie in wait.

Willis’s career is a house of cards, still.

So when you exhale after every hopeful outing, turn your head and blow in the opposite direction, just in case.

Last night, at Comerica Park, Willis won himself a baseball game.

Brilliantly.

His first win in the big leagues since 2007.

A masterpiece. Not just for him. For anyone.

A Freak Year is a year in which a player does so much better during one particular season that is yells at you to look at it.

There are many instances I could have used here, I could have done at least 15-20, but I thought it best to keep it at five.

If I, for example, was a career .245 hitter and one year I batted .362, most people would say "Freaky". If I normally hit 12 HR and went yard 55 times somebody would say "Freaky". You get my point.

So, let's look at Freak Years for five different players.

Unfortunately for the Metropolitans, the most feared bat in their lineup in Carlos Delgado, will be out until late July at the earliest.

Daniel Murphy is no longer the starting left fielder, Church is no longer the starting right fielder, and no one knows when Brian Schneider will be back (and to be honest, it doesn't seem like many people care when he will be back).

The only fortunate thing for the Mets, is their pitching staff has not been hurting at this time, it's just been the offensive players.
