The beauty of sport is its unpredictable nature, right?

It’s funny because even though we can all agree that sport is the best in unscripted reality television, our natural tendency is to predict. We think we know who may compete this baseball season simply because we can look at rosters and compare them.

The look on Bruce Bochy's face made it clear this wasn't the first time he was hearing the phrase "even-year magic." Heck, since leading the San Francisco Giants to the first of three straight even-year World Series titles in 2010, the veteran skipper has probably heard it a million times.

And he now seems prepared to hear it a million more times in 2016.

The offseason won't technically end until the first glorious, meaningless pitch of the MLB exhibition slate is thrown. We're getting close, though. Pitchers and catchers are packing their bags. Groundskeepers in the Sunshine and Grand Canyon States are rumbling into action.

From the Toronto Blue Jays' mini-extension for Josh Donaldson to the New York Mets' pact with Yoenis Cespedes, MLB brain trusts across the league have been swinging some seriously shrewd deals during the 2016 offseason.

While the new contracts for J.D. and La Potencia headline the list of "best" moves, there has also been no shortage of suspect signings and trades.

Before we get to the following list, let's first define what we mean by "best" and "worst" moves.

The Washington Nationals are built on the strength of their pitching rotation, but contract talks between the team and star pitcher Stephen Strasburg are dead in the water.

Andrew McCutchen doesn’t care if spring training is still a week away—he’s already in Florida, lifting, swinging and preparing to push the Pittsburgh Pirates even further than the 98 wins they posted last season. 

The New York Mets have star pitcher Matt Harvey under contract until 2018, though the team will likely pursue a long-term contract extension in the coming years.

Harvey Open to the Possibility of Signing an Extension

Harvey hasn't dismissed the possibility of signing a long-term contract extension with the Mets.

The start of spring training is right around the corner, but a number of intriguing MLB free-agent options are still looking for new homes on the open market.

Dexter Fowler, Yovani Gallardo and Ian Desmond are the three marquee names still waiting to sign, but qualifying offers have held them back this winter.

Cuban slugger Yulieski Gourriel is another interesting name recently added to the free-agent crop after he defected, and he could be headed for a significant payday of his own once he decides on a team.

The New York Yankees made the biggest splash of their otherwise subdued offseason when they acquired a Cuban-born player. That'd be flamethrowing closer Aroldis Chapman, whom they netted in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds.

Dave Roberts said all the right things as he was being introduced as the newest manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, talking about grit, individual accountability and the only thing Dodgers fans truly care about—ending a nearly 30-year championship drought.
