The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays opened a three-game series Friday with everything on the line, and they finished it Sunday with nothing settled.

That's how it's going to be in the American League East: back and forth, tit for tat, right down to the wire. Simply put, we're watching the best division battle in baseball unfold.

The MLB waiver wire is an awfully busy place this time of year.

As ESPN's Jayson Stark noted, "every player" in the bigs hits the the wire at some point in August. Of course, it's also an extremely mysterious place, as only a fraction of those major leaguers will make it through unclaimed and subsequently become available for a trade prior to the August 31 deadline.

The defending American League champion Kansas City Royals have their eyes on a World Series title this season, and they added some experienced pitching depth Sunday that could help them accomplish their goal.

With the Washington Nationals currently 4.5 games behind the New York Mets in the division, now seems like an apt time to talk about next year and the prospects who could get their feet wet with a September call-up.

Primarily due to injury, the Nationals have thrown a number of their top prospects into the MLB fire this season. So most of the team's late-season promotions will have already made their big league debuts. 

Talk all you want about odd-year curses. Point out that the San Francisco Giants are looking up at the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and at the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs in the NL wild-card race.

Javier the Los Angeles Dodgers ball boy tried to make a highlight-reel catch during Sunday's game, but instead, he will likely end up on some blooper reels.

In the top of the fifth inning, Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart sliced a ball down the left-field line. Javier got in position to try to make the catch and jumped for the ball, but he came up empty.

And he tumbled backward over the wall.

San Diego Padres left fielder Justin Upton was not happy after getting caught stealing in the top of the eighth inning of Saturday night's game against the Colorado Rockies, and he inadvertently took out his frustrations on teammate Yonder Alonso.

Upton swung his helmet in disgust as he walked through the dugout toward the bat rack. While he was just trying to let off some steam, he ended up losing control of his helmet—which hit an unaware Alonso in the head.

The Washington Nationals pulled off what may go down as the most spectacular groundout to the right side of the infield in MLB history Saturday night.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford ripped a sharp grounder between first baseman Clint Robinson and second baseman Anthony Rendon. Robinson tried to snag the grounder with a dive, but he ended up deflecting the ball into the air.

David Price and his cannon arm are enjoying the life with his new team. The Toronto Blue Jays are in command of a wild-card spot in the American League right now with help of an 8-2 run in their last 10 games.

The team is getting hot at the right time. 

Fact: Yesterday, Jackie Bradley Jr. became the youngest player in MLB history to record two home runs, five extra-base hits, five runs and seven RBI in a single game.
