This past offseason saw plenty of pitchers cash in on the free-agent market, but the upcoming class of free-agent arms could be the best we've seen in a long time.

Last winter, Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields headlined a solid crop of starters that also included the likes of Francisco Liriano, Ervin Santana, Edinson Volquez, Jake Peavy, Brandon McCarthy and Jason Hammel.

Each week of baseball's regular season brings any number of fascinating news, noteworthy developments and/or curious behavior.

The week that is about to conclude, Week 3, has been no different—and there's still part of the weekend left for something else to happen.

In the meantime, here are a handful of the biggest takeaways from the goings-on of the past seven days.

The Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays both have the ability to win the American League East, but not without improvements from their starting rotations. While big names like Cole Hamels and Johnny Cueto remain at the forefront of trade speculation, cheaper options are available that can offer improved production. 

With few aces in action on Saturday, we could be in for some high-scoring baseball games and a wild day in daily fantasy.

If baseball is America's favorite pastime, our second-favorite pastime might be predicting which players are going to be breakout stars in a new season.

Sometimes, we're right on the money with our predictions. But other times...well, other times it seems we might have spoken too soon.

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig re-injured his hamstring after stepping awkwardly on first base Friday night against the San Diego Padres.

Boston Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez left Friday's game against the Baltimore Orioles with a foot injury. He returned to the lineup on Saturday.

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com noted that Ramirez returned to the lineup:

David Vassegh, a co-host of AM 570's Dodger Talk, has called Gonzalez "slow" in the past. The 6'2", 220-pound Dodgers first baseman got tired of hearing that and decided to challenge the radio host to a foot race. 

It wasn't even close.

And thankfully, Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles was there to record the race.

Afterward, Vassegh gave Gonzalez some respect:

The St. Louis Cardinals received an injury scare on Friday as All-Star catcher Yadier Molina took a foul tip off his knee and was forced to leave the game.
